stock market, stocks, rupee, bank, pharma, metal, IT, auto, sensex, nifty, BSE, NSEStock market HIGHLIGHTS: Sensex and Nifty extended their losses during mid-afternoon trade deals on Friday.

The Sensex and Nifty closed in the negative territory for the third consecutive session on Friday, dragged down by heavy selling pressure witnessed in metals, auto, realty, IT, media, pharma and financial stocks. The Sensex, which fell 338 points to an intra-day low of 35,985.63 points, made a sharp recovery in late-afternoon deals to end Friday’s trade at 36,227.14 points, down 97.03 points or 0.27%. The Nifty ended 47.10 points or 0.43% lower at 10,930.45 points.

HDFC twins, Reliance, Axis Bank and ITC were the top contributors to the Sensex index in today’s trade, whereas LT, Yes Bank, Maruti Suzuki, Bharti Airtel, Tata Steel, Hero MotoCorp, Vedanta and Power Grid stocks together wiped off over 200 points.

In early morning trade deals on Friday, the domestic equity market indices slid into the negative territory after a higher opening on heavy selling pressure in index heavyweights. Although Sensex and Nifty had recouped from their day’s lows and traded in the positive territory during mid-morning deals, the indices failed to hold on to their gains on selling pressure.

Infibeam Avenues tumbled 73% to a record low of Rs 53.50 on the NSE on Friday. Yes Bank shares fell over 18% in intra-day trade on Friday. Most NBFC stocks witnessed value buying.

Short covering in banking stocks helped bank nifty to close on a positive note- Geojit Financial Services

Factors like heightened volatility of the money market, INR depreciation, increased bond yield, selling by FIIs in the emerging market, triggered cautiousness in the market. Mid & small cap continued to underperform while short covering in banking stocks helped bank nifty to close on a positive note. Investors are yet to gain confidence to start bottom fishing due to lack of liquidity, margin funding and short selling in the market.

Expectation from upcoming RBI monetary policy

“RBI is expected to employ various liquidity management tools to ease the tight liquidity and the volatility in the money markets triggered by the sharp depreciation in the rupee and the recent defaults in Commercial Papers (CP) by a large conglomerate. The tightness in the liquidity was clearly visible with the spurt in the weighted average call money rate (WACR) and its differential with the repo rate narrowing to only 4 bps over the last fortnight. RBI has already permitted banks to avail additional liquidity, if necessary from a larger pool of high quality liquid assets (HQLA) which is kept as SLR. In the opinion of Acuité Ratings, further liquidity management measures can be expected in the run up to the monetary policy statement in early October.”

Today’s small-caps to be large-caps in few years, says Ambit Capital’s Sushant Bhansali

'This (mid-cap and small-cap) space has become very interesting after the recent fall. We believe there will be opportunities in this space for right companies. Today’s small and mid-cap companies have the potential to grow faster than the market and become large cap companies in few years, thereby providing better returns to investors. The key is however to identify the winners of tomorrow. Kotak Mahindra was less than 500 crore market cap in 2001 and is more than 2 lakh crore now. Patience pays!!' said Sushant Bhansali, MD & Head of Principal Investments at Ambit Private Ltd., in an interview with FE Online.
