The 30-share index was under pressure since the start of trade inspite of PSU bank stocks rising sharply in pre-opening session following the ordinance on NPA being signed by President Pranab Mukherjee, however, failed to sustain the momentum.
Market benchmark Sensex opened 0.24% down and continued its dismal shiow throught the day to closed at 29,858.80, 0.89% or 267.41 points lower than yesterday’s close.

The 51-share NSE Nifty fell 74.60 points or 0.80 per cent to settle at 9,285.30. Nifty too was under pressure since the very start of trade, even as Bank Nifty rose 0.59% to 22,853.55 points on the back of strong show by PSU bank stocks, couldnt not hold on to the higher levels and traded in red from the very start of trade.
A total of 26 scrips on the 30-share Sensex fell, while 4 scrips ended higher, while 37 scrips on the 51-share Nifty fell 14 scrips ended higher.

Gainers for the day on the Sensex were Adani Ports up 1.56% at Rs 344.90; Asian Paints up 1.40% at Rs 1,146.20; ICICI Bank up 0.20% at Rs 298.55; Maruti Suzuki India Ltd up 0.17% at Rs 6648.15.
Major losers for the day on the Sensex were Tata Motors down 3.84% to Rs 419.75; ONGC down 2.83% at Rs 183.40; Axis Bank down 2.70% at Rs 504.90; Gas Authority of India Limited down 2.49% at Rs 417.20.
The total turnover on BSE amounted to Rs 4,462.31 crore, lower than Rs 4,233.49 crore registered during the previous trading session. Market breadth remained negative as 2,006 stocks closed in the negative, 833 stocks finished higher and 141 remained unchanged.
The total market cap of BSE Sensex was Rs 50.7201 lakh crore. The Price to Earnings (PE) multiple of the Sensex stood at 22.83 while its Price to Book value (PB) multiple was at 2.95 and the Dividend Yield was at 1.38.
