Sensex Today Updates, Nifty 50, Stock Market Highlights: The Sensex closed at 76,847.57, down 702.68 points or 0.91%. The Nifty ended at 23,842.65, lower by 207.95 points or 0.86% today, April 13 after fresh geopolitical tension have once again clouded the outlook.

Crude oil prices surged sharply, with Brent crossing $103/bbl and WTI rising to around $104.

US President Donald Trump said the US Navy will “immediately” begin a blockade to stop ships from entering or leaving the Strait of Hormuz after US-Iran peace talks in Pakistan ended without an agreement. Iran has demanded the right to collect tolls from vessels traveling through the Strait, but Trump said no one who pays them will have safe passage on the high seas.

4 big factors impacting Sensex, Nifty on Monday

1. Strait of Hormuz tension: The biggest trigger comes from a sharp escalation over the weekend across Middle East. Donald Trump has ordered a naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil shipments.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said, “Effective immediately, the United States Navy…will begin the process of blockading any and all ships trying to enter, or leave, the Strait of Hormuz.” He added that the move aims to counter what he described as “world extortion” by Iran.

Reiterating his stance, he said, “Iran will never have a nuclear weapon!” He also issued a strong warning: “Any Iranian who fires at us, or at peaceful vessels, will be blown to hell!” and added that US forces are “locked and loaded.”

2. Iran response raises stakes further: In response, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed control over the strategic waterway.

In a statement, it said: “All traffic…is under the full control of the armed forces.”

3. China warning adds another layer of uncertainty: The situation has widened beyond the Middle East after Donald Trump warned China of “staggering” tariffs if it extends military support to Iran.

4. Q4 earnings in focus: Even as global cues dominate, domestic triggers remain active. Today, companies like ICICI Prudential Asset Management Company and Swaraj Engines will announce their March quarter results. Moreover, some are also expected to declare dividends.

Sensex Today, Nifty 50, Stock Market Live Update: Investor sentiment cautious

"Gold prices fell after marking a weekly gain as US -Iran talks fail over the weekend and escalation around the strait of Hormuz increase. While sentiment improved after U.S. President Trump announced a temporary truce, lingering uncertainties around the durability of the agreement—especially amid continued Israeli strikes on Hezbollah targets in Lebanon—kept investors cautious....." said Manav Modi Commodities Analyst, Motilal Oswal Financial Services.

He added that US March CPI data arch CPI showed a sharp spike driven by surging energy prices, which highlighted the inflationary impact of the ongoing conflict. While headline inflation rose significantly, core inflation remained relatively contained, offering some relief to markets.

Modi noted that, elevated inflation expectations continue to complicate the outlook for Federal Reserve policy, reinforcing a higher-for-longer rate environment. "As a result, gold remains caught between geopolitical support and macroeconomic headwinds, with price action driven by inflation trends, interest rate expectations, and ongoing developments in the Middle East conflict. Foreign investors have been sellers of local equities and bonds worth over $19 billion since the beginning of the West Asia conflict on February 28.

Sensex Today, Nifty 50, Stock Market Live Update: Windfall tax may reshape refinery economics

The impact of windfall tax on India’s oil and gas sector could play out differently across companies, according to the brokerage house Nomura. The brokerage expects that the tax may not apply to the export refinery of Reliance Industries, which accounts for nearly half of its total refining capacity. However, domestic refiners are likely to remain under the tax net when exporting products like diesel and ATF.

The report highlighted that standalone refiners such as Nayara, MRPL, CPCL and others could face the windfall tax burden. This, in turn, may change how fuel is sold in the market. Nomura noted that “standalone refiners may get into agreements with OMCs to sell diesel and ATF at their export realized prices (post windfall tax)”, which could reduce costs for oil marketing companies.

As a result, OMCs like Hindustan Petroleum Corporation, Indian Oil Corporation and Bharat Petroleum Corporation may see some benefit. Nomura added that HPCL could gain more, as a large part of its diesel sales depends on supplies from standalone refiners. It also estimates current integrated margins at “-USD2.2/bbl for IOCL, -USD7.3/bbl for BPCL and -USD18.5/bbl for HPCL,” indicating that despite some relief, margin pressure still remains at current price levels.

Sensex Today, Nifty 50, Stock Market Live Update: Weak start likely for markets as global tension weigh; key Nifty levels in focus

"Indian markets are set to begin the week on a weak note, with Gift Nifty indicating a gap-down opening near the 23,700 zone. The negative start is largely driven by deteriorating global sentiment following fresh geopolitical escalation in the Middle East. The failure of U.S.–Iran negotiations over the weekend has heightened concerns of a prolonged conflict, further intensified by reports of a U.S. naval blockade on Iranian ports," said Hariprasad K, SEBI-registered Research Analyst and Founder, Livelong Wealth.

"From a technical standpoint, Nifty’s structure remains constructive but vulnerable in the near term. The 24,000 level now acts as an immediate support, followed by 23,600 where buying interest is expected to emerge. A breach below these levels could open the door toward the stronger support base near 23,000. On the upside, 24,500 remains an immediate resistance zone where supply pressure is likely," he added.

Sensex Today, Nifty 50, Stock Market Live Update: Oil rises 8%

In early Asian trade, crude oil prices surges by 8%, again climbing past the $100/bbl mark. The global benchmark, Brent was quoted near the $103/mark, while the US crude, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) was trading near the $105/bbl level.

The surge comes amid failed peace talks between Tehran and Washington over which, US President Donald Trump announced a blockade of the trade-route, Strait of Hormuz. Trump said the blockage would start today at 7:30 PM (IST), prohibiting ships to enter and exit through the Iranian ports.

This has added to the uncertainty for oil prices which are already trading at elevated levels.
