Markets live: Sensex, Nifty end at record closing highs, inflation data supports; Tata Steel leads, Idea slumps

Indian markets opened higher on the back of positive macroeconomic data released earlier on Friday evening, with continuously increasing forex reserves since the start of the fiscal financial year 2018, balanced inflation figures and production growth.

Meanwhile, Asian stocks got off to a shaky start on Monday as a ransomware attack that locked up more than 200,000 computers in over 150 countries and a missile test by North Korea on Sunday kept investors on edge.

05:05 pm: Indian benchmark indices started the week on a strong footing with both the gauges closing at new lifetime record levels. The BSE Sensex rose 0.44% to close at 30,322.12 points, up 133.97 points from its previous close, while the NSE Nifty 50 gained 0.47% to reach 9,445.40 points at end of trade for the day, a gain of 44.50 points. 03:30 pm: Sensex, Nifty end at fresh record highs, BSE Sensex up 0.44% at 30,322.12 points while NSE Nifty 50 up 0.49% at 9,446.8 points. Tata Steel and Dr Reddy’s end in lead, Idea Cellular ends down 6.33% at Rs 86.5.

03:15 pm: Markets about to close, BSE Sensex up 0.44% at 30,322.06 while NSE Nifty up 0.47% at 9,445.5 points. Colgate-Palmolive (India) Ltd shares down 1.78% at Rs 996, after reporting a marginally low Q4 net profit for the FY 2017.

01:55 pm: Market trade firm, BSE Sensex up 0.36% at 30,298.24 points while the broader Nifty 50 up 0.38% at 9,436.5 points. Tata Steel (up 4.11%) and Dr Reddy’s (up 3.8%) continue to lead Sensex.

01:30 pm: Kotak Mahindra Bank shares continue the rise, hit the all new lifetime high of Rs 981.85 in the intraday trade on Nifty 50.

01:10 pm: Wind power solutions provider Inox Wind shares tanked over 19 per cent on Monday after the company’s consolidated net profit declined 36 per cent to Rs 127.54 crore in the quarter ended March 31 as compared to the consolidated net profit of Rs 201.12 crore in the corresponding quarter a year ago. At 12.20 pm, share price of the company was trading 16.49 per cent down at Rs 168.65. (Read More)

12:55 pm: The Indian rupee rose 0.3 percent on Monday on news that India’s consumer inflation eased in April to its lowest in at least five years. Consumer prices rose by an annual 2.99 percent, compared with March’s 3.89 percent, data released by the Ministry of Statistics showed on Friday. (Read Full Story)

12:40 pm: Indian shares rose on Monday, while the benchmark 10-year bond hit its highest in four weeks, after consumer inflation in April eased to its lowest in at least five years, reviving a debate on whether the central bank should cut interest rates. Meanwhile, the rupee rose to 64.0275 per dollar, its strongest since April 27, on expectations of additional foreign portfolio inflows into Indian markets. (Read Full Story)

12:20 pm: Markets hold the morning gains, BSE Sensex up 0.41% at 30,312.21 points while NSE Nifty up 0.41% at 9439.1 points. Hindalco (up 3.64%), Tata Steel (up 3.63%), Dr Reddy’s (up 3.09%), Kotak Mahindra Bank (up 2.23%), Grasim (up 2.13%) lead on Nifty 50.

12:05 pm: Idea Cellular shares fell over 6 per cent on Monday after the company announced its fourth quarter results on Saturday and posted a consolidated loss of Rs 325.6 crore in the three-month period ended March 31, 2017, as compared to a profit of Rs 449.2 crore in the same period a year ago. 11:45 am: The Reserve Bank of India has directed banks to operate their ATMs only after the installed computer systems have received a special Windows update to protect them from a malware impacting systems across the world. 11:25 am: Shares of Piramal Enterprises Ltd hit a new all-time high, soar 13% to Rs 2,949.9 on the back of higher than expected Q4 consolidated net profit of Rs 310.96 crore as compared to the previous fiscal net profit of Rs 193.07 crore.

11:00 am: Mid-caps continue to gain, shares of Britannia (at Rs 3,799.5), DLF (at Rs 211.65) and Motherson Sumi (at Rs 417.9) hit a fresh  52-week high on NSE.

10:40 am: Markets extends morning gains, BSE Sensex up 0.45% at 30,324.35 points while NSE Nifty 0.46% at 9,443.85 points. Nifty Bank trading firm, up 0.75 at 22,841.9 points, Kotak Mahindra Bank and ICICI Bank lead.

10:20 am: HDFC, ITC and ICICI Bank shares pulling the Sensex up while Infosys, Reliance Industries and Adani Ports shares dragging it down. (Read More)

10:05 am: Kotak Mahindra Bank and Ultratech Cement shares hit a new all-time high of Rs 980.5 and Rs 4,497.85 respectively on NSE.

09:50 am: All the major sectoral indices inch up except the Nifty IT while the Real Estate stock index, Nifty Realty and the Auto stock index, Nifty Auto of NSE hit a fresh lifetime high in the opening bell.

09:35 am: ICICI Bank (up 2.02%), Tata Steel (up 1.75% ) and ONGC (up 1.49%) among the top gainers on Sensex while Infosys and Wipro drag.
