Sensex | Nifty Highlights: After Monday’s brutal cut, Indian equity indices closed the trade on a higher note, snapping a losing streak. The Nifty closed decisively above the 24,200 mark, rising 234 points or 0.97% to settle at 24,261.60. The BSE Sensex gained 640 points or 0.82% to close at 78,205. Several companies for whom crude is a key raw material saw a strong start as the oil prices fell 10%. Top gainers included names like Shriram Finance, IndiGo, and Asian Paints.

Crude oil
The crude oil prices saw a sharp downward move. It fell below the $90/bbl, plunging 10% after US President Donald Trump warned Iran against blocking the Strait of Hormuz.
Asian Markets
The Asian indices on Tuesday morning opened on a higher note, tracking the fall in crude oil prices. South Korea’s Kospi surged over 5% at the open. Japan’s Nikkei 225 jumped 1.66%.
US markets
The US equity markets closed on a higher note as the US President Donald Trump indicated that the Iran war could be nearing its end. The S&P 500 index rose 0.83% while the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.5%. The Nasdaq Composite jumped 1.38% and settled at 22,695.95.
Gold rate today
The rate for 24-carat gold today is around Rs 1,60,710 per 10 grams. On COMEX, the precious metal was trading at Rs 5,142.90 an ounce, rising 0.77%.
Silver rate today
In India, the silver rate declined 0.35% at Rs 2.67 lakh per kilogram. On COMEX, Silver prices surged 3% on Tuesday to trade at $87.035 per troy ounce.
FII, DII data
Foreign institutional investors (FII) were the net sellers of shares worth Rs 6,345.57 crore. On the other hand, the Domestic institutional investors (DII) were the net buyers of shares worth Rs 9,013.80 crore on March 09, 2025, according to the provisional data available on the NSE.
US dollar
The US Dollar Index (DXY), which measures the dollar’s value against a basket of six foreign currencies, was up 0.01% at 98.76.
Top sectors in Monday’s trade
The PSU Bank sector’s stocks fell the most in Monday’s trade, declining 4.2% in the market capitalisation. Further, cement stocks were followed by the automobile sector stocks, which were further followed by the plastic stocks. However, the sugar sector stocks rose the most, rising 0.51%.

News agency Reuters citing traders reported that the RBI likely intervened and sold dollar to help lift the domestic currency. Yesterday, the currency had hit an all time low of 92.33 against the US Dollar.

On the other hand, Infosys, Bharat Petroleum Corporation, Tata Consultancy Services, Eternal (Zomato), and Solar Industries were the major losers.
For afternoon trade, Shree Ram Finance was the top gainer in Nifty 50, as the company's share price was up by over 7%. Interglobe Aviation and SBI Life Insurance were also amongst the gainers with share price up by over 3%.
In the index, the share price of Infosys was trending down by nearly 2%, while Eternal, TCS, and Reliance were also down by over 1%.

"Indian equity markets opened on a mildly positive note, supported by improving global sentiment following signs of easing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East." Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money commented on market opening.
He added that a pullback in crude oil prices and a softer U.S. dollar, has helped improve overall risk appetite across global markets.
"Despite the positive start, investor sentiment remains cautious, and markets are likely to remain volatile in the near term as participants continue to monitor geopolitical developments and broader global macro cues. " the analyst said.

On the sectoral front, as of 12:21 PM, Nifty Cement was down by over 4%, while Nifty IT declined by over 1%. Nifty Oil and Gas too was trading in red.
The consumer durables index was up by 2%, while auto, financial services, pharma, realty, and bank indices extended gains of over 1%.

"We are of the view that the current market texture is weak but oversold. For day traders, 24,000-23,900/77500-77200 would act as key support zones. Above this, we could see an extension of the pullback move till 24,200-24,300/78000-78300." Shrikant Chouhan, Head Equity Research, Kotak Securities said.
The analysts added that on the flip side, below 23,900/77200, the selling pressure is likely to accelerate, pointing that if the market falls below this level, it could retest 23,700/76500. He noted that further downside may also continue, potentially dragging the index to 23,500/76000.
"The strategy should be to reduce weak long positions between 24200/24300 levels. " Chouhan said.

Accoding to him, "technically, on the backdrop of weak global sentiment, our market opened with a gap down of over 500/2400 points. However, in the second half, it trimmed some losses.
