NSE Nifty logged small gains in a highly volatile last day trading of the week registering gains for sixth day in a row, up by 12.60 points owing to fag-end profit booking mainly in IT, realty and metal sectors. While selling pressure were seen mainly in energy, PSU banks and pharma stocks. Overseas, European stocks gyrated between small gains and losses, as investors sifted through earnings reports. The NSE 50-share Nifty index opened higher at 8,956.40 and hovered between 8,982.15 and 8,927.55 before closing at 8,939.50, a modest gain of 12.60 pts, or 0.14 percent from its last close. It saw an intra-day movement of about 54.60 pts.
Sector-wise, IT rose by 1.66 per cent, Realty 0.78 per cent and Metal 0.42 per cent, while Energy fell by 0.94 per cent followed by PSU Bank 0.49 per cent and Pharma 0.20 pct. Major Index gainers were Idea 6.22 per cent followed by TCS 2.92 per cent, Wipro 2.44 per cent, Kotak Bank 1.90 per cent, Infosys 1.89 per cent and BhartiAirtel 1.50 per cent. While notable losers were Grasim 2.16 per cent, Reliance 2.05 per cent, AuroPharma 1.76 per cent, PowerGrid 1.22 per cent and AsianPaints 1.11 per cent.
A total of 984 scrips declined, 666 advanced, while 61 remained unchanged. Total securities that hit their price bands were 99. Turnover in cash segment rose to Rs 33,124.92 crore from Rs 26,463.54 crs, yesterday. A total of 15,490.96 lakh shares changed hands in 9,563,909 trades. The market capitalisation of NSE stood at Rs 11,569,933.48 crore. The National Stock Exchange (NSE) will remain closed tomorrow, 24 February, 2017 on account of “Mahashivratri”.
