Owner of the Mumbai Indians team, Mukesh Ambani’s net worth by increased by a whopping $10 billion, to $50 billion, over the last one year period, and it has more than doubled over the past two years. “He is the 13th-richest person on the planet, the richest person in India and the richest sports team owner,” Forbes noted in its recent report.
Notably, the top 20 richest owners included 13 rising fortunes, two static and five decliners. Interestingly, there are 58 billionaire owners of teams in major sports leagues around the world who are the majority shareholder or managing partner of a team. They collectively own 70 teams and are worth a combined $359 billion, said the report.
After Mukesh Ambani, former top boss of IT giant Microsoft Steve Ballmer who owns the Los Angeles Clippers team ranks 2nd on the list with a net worth of $41.2 billion. “The longtime Microsoft CEO, who bought the Clippers in 2014, has kept most his shares in the software giant after retiring as CEO in 2014, and the strategy has paid off. Microsoft’s stock has doubled over the past four years, and so has Ballmer’s net worth,” noted the Forbes report.
Austrian billionaire businessman Dietrich Mateschitz who owns teams including New York Red Bulls, Red Bull Racing, Red Bull Toro Rosso Honda came third on the list with a net worth totalling to $18.9 billion. Hasso Plattner & family which owns the San Jose Sharks is next on the list with $13.50 billion net worth. Roman Abramovich, owner of Chelsea FC has a total net worth of $12.40 billion, grabbing the 5th position.
Interestingly, while a majority of other billionaires have seen a decline in their net worth according to Forbes, Mukesh Ambani bucked the trend. According to the publication, there are 2,153 billionaires, with a combined net worth of $8.7 trillion in the world. Jeff Bezos–with a whopping $131 billion–continues to remain at the top of the overall list.
