Sensex closed 118.07 points, or 0.42 per cent, up at 28,123.44, while Nifty 50 index settled 49.20 points up at 8,673.25.
The BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty ended higher on Thursday on account of buying in frontline blue chip stocks amid mixed global cues. In the 50-share index, UltraTech Cement, Power Grid, NTPC, IndusInd Bank and Grasim Industries gained between 2.86 per cent and 4.86 per cent. On the other hand, Coal India, Tata Power, Tata Steel, Tech Mahindra and Infosys slid between 1 per cent and 2.53 per cent.
Among the sectoral indices on BSE, the BSE Power index closed higher by 1.83 per cent, followed by BSE Bankex (up 1.64 per cent), BSE Telecom (up 1.21 per cent) and BSE Realty (up 1.09 per cent). On the other hand, BSE Metal and BSE Consumer Durables index slipped 0.55 per cent and 0.48 per cent, respectively.
Other Asian peers remained mixed on Thursday. Shanghai and Nikkei closed down by 0.17 per cent and 1.55 per cent, respectively. However, Hang Seng settled higher by 0.98 per cent.
3.20 pm: Claris Lifesciences shares were trading 11.43 per cent up at Rs 279.70. The scrip opened the day at Rs 251.50 and has touched a high and low of Rs 282.45 and Rs 250.65, respectively, in trade so far.
3.14 pm: Sensex was up 117 points at 28123. Nifty was trading 46.15 points up at 8,670.
2.13 pm: JSW Steel shares were trading higher after it announced that the comany has completed the acquisition of the entire 74 per cent stake of Praxair India in JSW Praxair Oxygen (JPOPL), for a cash consideration of Rs 240 crore. Post the aforesaid acquisition, JPOPL has become a wholly owned subsidiary of the company. Shares of the comany were trading 0.32 per cent up at Rs 1777.70. Sensex was up 113 points at 28118. Nifty was trading 43.35 points up at 8667.40.

1.04 pm: RBI Bank IPO will hit capital markets on Friday to raise around Rs 1,217 crore at a price band of Rs 224-225. The issue will close on August 23. Benchmark BSE Sensex was trading 154 points up at 28,159. Nifty was trading 53.30 points up at 8,677.
12.35 pm: Larsen & Toubro Infotech has entered into a strategic partnership with Coupa, a leader in cloud-based spend management and procurement software platform. This partnership will enable enterprises to rationalise spends, achieve measurable savings, control costs and improve cash management. Shares of the company were trading 0.29 per cent down at Rs 676.90.
12.30 pm: Power Grid Corporation shares were trading 2.98 per cent up at Rs 179.75. The company is reportedly planning to participate in intra-state projects, a deviation from its traditional role as the central power transmission utility that has been prompted by the reforms in state-run power distribution companies. Sensex was trading 150.68 points up at 28156. Nifty was trading 52.95 points up at 8,677.
11.36 am: In order to boost capital base, Bank of India has raised Rs 540 crore through monetisation of its non-core assets so far in the ongoing financial year 2016-17 and is planning to raise a similar amount in the rest of the year. Sensex was trading 144 points up at 28149. Nifty was up 51 points at 8,675.
11.07 am: Sensex was trading 160 points up at 28165. Nifty was up 52.70 points at 8,676. Sugar stocks such as Uttam Sugar Mills and KCP Sugar were trading higher by 4.96 per cent and 9.30 per cent, respectively in the morning trade.
10.31 am: IndusInd Bank shares were trading 2.61 per cent higher at Rs 1185.45 in the morning trade. BSE Bankex was 1.47 per cent up at Rs 22,158.19. Sensex was trading 203 points up at 28,208. Nifty was trading 56.90 points up at 8680.95.
9.25 am: Metal stocks such as Hindalco and Tata Steel touched their fresh 52-week high of Rs 157 and Rs 394 in today’s trade. Sensex was trading 135.57 points up at 28,140. Nifty was up 36.45 points at 8,660.45.
9.16 am: Sensex was trading 135.62 points up at 28,140.99. Nifty was up by 32.25 points, or 0.37 per cent, at 8656.30. In the 30-share index, Power Grid, Adani Ports, ICICI Bank and Hero MotoCorp were up 1.86 per cent, 1.67 per cent, 1.50 per cent and 1.48 per cent, respectively. On the other hand, Wipro, Coal India and Larsen & Toubro were down by 0.80 per cent, 0.73 per cent and 0.50 per cent, respectively.
9.15 am: Sensex opened 72.27 points, or 0.26 per cent, up at 28077.64, while Nifty opened 24.80 points, or 0.29 per cent, up at 8,648.85.
The BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty are likely to open in green on Thursday tracking Nifty futures on the Singapore Stock Exchange (SGX Nifty) and mixed global cues. At 7.46 am (IST), SGX Nifty was up 20 points at 8,649. Asian peers Hang Seng and Shanghai were trading higher by 1.30 per cent and 0.14 per cent, respectively, in the morning trade. However, Nikkei was trading down by 0.47 per cent.
Benchmark BSE Sensex closed 59.24 points down at 28005.37 on Wednesday on account of selling in selected IT, oil & gas and pharma counters. Nifty closed 18.50 points down at 8,624.05.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average index closed higher by 21.92 points, or 0.12 per cent, at 18,573.94, the S&P 500 gained 4.07 points, or 0.19 per cent, at 2,182.22 and the Nasdaq Composite also closed higher by 1.55 points, or 0.03 percent, at 5,228.66.
Shares of India Cements and Uflex will remain in focus on Thursday. Uflex on Wednesday posted an increase of 11.62 per cent in consolidated net profit at Rs 86.16 crore for the first quarter ended June 30 against Rs 77.19 crore in the corresponding quarter a year ago.
India Cements will announce its financial results for the quarter ended June 30, 2016 on Thursday.
