Sensex ends 85 points up in volatile trade, Nifty settles above 8,590; Bank of Baroda, SBI slip

The BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty ended in green on Thursday on account of buying in frontline blue chip counters. Sensex closed 84.72 points up at 27859,60, while Nifty settled 16.85 points up at 8,592.15. In the 50-share index, Bank of Baroda, Grasim Industries, Zee Entertainment, Bharti Infratel and Hindalco slipped between 2.15 per cent and 9.24 per cent. On the other hand, Eicher Motors, Idea Cellular, BPCL, Lupin and ITC gained between 2.02 per cent and 2.82 per cent.

Sectorwise, the BSE FMCG index gained the most — 1.44 per cent, followed by BSE Oil & Gas (up 0.74 per cent), BSE Power index (up 0.38 per cent) and BSE IT index (up 0.27 per cent). On the other hand, BSE Realty and BSE Metal index slipped by 0.90 per cent and 0.68 per cent, respectively.

The BSE Midcap index ended 0.03 per cent up at 12648, while Smallcap index ended 0.02 per cent lower at 12,189.

Asian peers showed mixed performance on Thursday. Shanghai Composite closed 0.53 per cent down at 3002.64, while Hang Seng settled 0.39 per cent up at 22580.55.

3.12 pm: Benchmark Sensex was up 87.52 points at 27862. Nifty was trading 19.40 points up at 8594. Escorts was trading nearly 20 per cent up at Rs 307.50. Read more  

2.31 pm: Atlanta shares surged over 15 per cent after the company registered net profit of Rs 27.89 crore for the quarter ended June 30, 2016 against net loss of Rs 7.69 crore in the same quarter a year ago.

2.06 pm: Borosil Glass Works shares gained as much as 6.78 per cent on Thursday after the company announced 132 per cent rise in net profit at Rs 9.88 crore for the quarter ended June 30, 2016 against Rs 4.26 crore in the corresponding quarter a year ago.

2.01 pm: NHPC has successfully commissioned Unit 4 of Teesta Low Dam Project-IV (160 MW) at its full load of 40 MW on August 11, 2016. Shares of the company were trading 0.97 per cent up at Rs 26.15.

1.18 pm: Indag Rubber was trading higher after it said the company has agreed to acquire more than 51 per cent shares or voting rights in five companies – Samyama Jyothi Solar Energy, Poorvaj Solar Energy, SUN Solar KFP Bellari, BG SUN Solar Hiriyur and Arete Elena Energy. The scrip was trading 0.17 per cent up at Rs 174.

1.09 pm: Grasim Industries shares were trading 5.66 per cent down at Rs 4577.

1.00 pm: Among the 30-share index, 14 stocks were ended in red. Sun Pharma and M&M were down 2.37 per cent and 2.23 per cent. Lupin, RIL and ITC were up by 1.22 per cent, 1.09 per cent and 0.93 per cent, respectively. Sensex was down 12 points at 27762.

12.05 pm: Tata Communications shares hit their fresh 52-week high of Rs 519. At 12.05 pm, shares of the company were trading 2.95 per cent up at Rs 496.65. Sensex was up 120 points at 27895. Nifty was trading 23.60 points up at 8,598.

11.11 am: Sensex was trading 75 points up at 27850. Nifty was up 9.55 points at 8,584. Mahindra & Mahindra was trading 1.65 per cent down at Rs 1,424. The auto major on Tuesday reported strong profit growth of 12.36 per cent and 14 per cent jump in gross revenues in the first quarter of the ongoing financial year on higher vehicles sales.

10.27 am: Indian rupee was trading down by 18 paise at 66.90 against the dollar in early trade on higher demand for the American currency from importers and banks

10.16 am: Meanwhile, shares of Dilip Buildcon listed on bourses at Rs 240, up 10 per cent, against the issue price of Rs 219. Sensex was up 6 points at 27,781.

9.35 am: In the 50-share index , BPCL, Idea Cellular, Lupin, ITC and BHEL were up between 1.09 per cent and 2.13 per cent. On the other hand, Bank of Baroda, Sun Pharma, ZEEL, Tata Motors DVR and Hindalco were down between 1.36 per cent and 7.09 per cent.

9.15 am: Sensex opened 31.06 points up at 27805.94, while Nifty opened 2.50 points down at 8572.80. Bank of Baroda shares plunged over 5 per cent in the early trade after the bank reported nearly 60 per cent year-on-year fall in net profit at Rs 423.62 crore. Read more


The BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty are likely to open higher on Thursday tracking Nifty futures on the Singapore Stock Exchange (SGX Nifty) and mixed global cues. At 8.20 am (IST), SGX Nifty was trading 15.50 points up at 8,606. Asian peer Hang Seng, Nikkei and Shanghai were down by 0.06 per cent, 0.18 per cent and 0.01 per cent, respectively, in the morning trade. On Wall Street, Dow Jones Industrial Average Index slid 0.20 per cent to 18495.66 on Wednesday. Nasdaq Composite slid 0.40 per cent to 5,204.

Benchmark BSE Sensex tanked by 310 points on Wednesday on account of profit booking in auto, healthcare and oil & gas stocks. NSE Nifty slipped 102.95 points to 8,575.
