Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday dedicated the Rs 12,000-crore expansion and modernisation project of the Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) to the nation. With the launch of the new facilities, the plant’s capacity has jumped to 4.5 million tonne from 2 million tonne.
Modi visited the new plate mill floor set up as part of the expansion and modernisation programme. He became the second prime minister after Jawahar Lal Nehru to visit the RSP, a unit of Steel Authority of India (SAIL).
Modi, while addressing a large public meeting organised for the purpose, called upon states to work together with the Centre, with a long-term vision, to develop the country and pave the way for the prosperity of future generations.
The prime minister said India has surpassed America in steel production, but is still far behind China, and therefore, a lot more still needed to be done. He said value addition is necessary in India’s mineral wealth, in order to build a strong economy.
