Eureka Skydeck launches Sony Pictures’ The Walk in Australia’s highest tightrope walk 300m above the ground. Melbournians held their collective breath when an adrenaline pumping tightrope walk took place on the rooftop of Eureka Tower. To mark the arrival of Sony Pictures’ The Walk, to Melbourne in October, Eureka Skydeck took onlookers to the clouds when professional high-wire artist, Kane Petersen, walked from one point of the North Western side of Eureka Tower to the other; a 21-metre-long walk, 300 metres above the ground and the highest of its kind in Australian history.
Only three-quarters of an inch wide, the wire was set against the elements, as Kane re-enacted the crossing of Phillippe Petit who walked the twin towers of the World Trade Center in 1974. In recognition of the true story feel-good film, Eureka Skydeck has created an interactive high wire walk experience that will bring out the daredevil in those visiting the popular observation deck during the school holiday period.
The Walk Experience at Eureka Skydeck is a specially constructed set that gives guests the impression they must keep their balance on the wire or face falling 300 metres to the bottom. The gravity-defying green screen installation will be placed inside Eureka Skydeck on Level 88 of Eureka Tower from September 18, 2015. Guests can immerse themselves in the thrill of walking on a tightrope above Melbourne city and envision what it’s like to walk from one end of the rope to the other, just as Philippe Petit did in The Walk.
John Forman, executive general manager, Eureka Skydeck, believes the high wire feat is a fitting symbol for Eureka Skydeck, the highest public vantage point in the Southern Hemisphere. “The unique shape of Eureka Tower enabled this type of stunt, which has in turn allowed us to pay homage to Philippe Petit and the World Trade Center Towers. We’re very excited by the concept and are proud to associate ourselves with Sony Pictures and The Walk. It’s a great opportunity to showcase the city of Melbourne and what was certainly a heart-stopping stunt,” said Forman.
