Tropical storm Harvey, the most powerful hurricane to hit the US mainland in 12 years, made landfall in central Texas coast with winds of 130 mph, taking aim at the state’s oil refining industry and knocking out power to more than a lakh homes. The National Hurricane Centre said Harvey made landfall between Port Aransas and Port O’Connor in Texas, the US state where roughly 17 per cent of America’s crude oil output and nearly half of the country’s refining capacity is located. Houston, the most populous city in Texas, is home to the country’s largest refinery and petrochemical complex. A satellite imagery of the hurricane Harvey showed the eye of the storm making landfall near Corpus Christi at 11 pm ET.
The hurricane then made a second landfall as a Category 3 hurricane with 125 mph winds on the northeastern shore of Copano Bay at 2 am ET on Saturday. Harvey will likely batter the state with major winds, historic rainfall and potentially “catastrophic” flooding. According to a report by NBC News, eight million people are under hurricane warnings, and nearly one million others are under tropical storm warnings.

Furthermore, more than 158,000 people in the Corpus Christi area were without power as of early Saturday, power company AEP Texas said.
As per a report by Reuters, early damage reports from Gulf Coast cities included collapsed roofs and walls. One community transported multiple people from a senior living home to the county jail for treatment after a roof caved in. But officials remained largely unable to assess the damage before daylight. The storm is expected to slow further and flood the area with rain through the middle of next week. The center warned that Harvey could produce life-threatening storm surges along a coastal area of more than 400 miles.
