You must have come across sci-fi movies in the past where the Earth is threatened by alien invasion and some heroes come to the rescue. What if our planet was ever attacked by aliens in reality? Have you ever wondered who is going to save it then? NASA assuming this could be a reality is hiring planetary protection officer to protect Earth from alien contamination according to Indian Express report. The job listing was posted by US government’s official employment site. The post is open to US nationals and the interested ones can send in their applications till August 14.
The salary bracket for a planetary protection officer can be anything between $124,406 to $187,000 per year and the security clearance has been listed as ‘secret’. The officer is expected to stop astronauts and robots from contamination with any organic and biological material during the time in space. According to the job listing on the official site,“ Leads planning and coordination of activities related to NASA mission planetary protection needs. Leads independent evaluation of, and provides advice regarding, compliance by robotic and human spaceflight missions with NASA planetary protection policies, statutory requirements, and international obligations.”
The listing also suggests that it is a three-year contract which could be extended for two more years. This time will be used by NASA to plan several missions including one to Jupiter’s moon Europa which is the sixth-largest moon in the Solar System.
