Indian: The cuisines vary substantially in different parts of the country. Indian foods are prepared with a lot of spices, herbs and vegetables. Rice, bajra (pearl millet), atta (wheat flour) form the staple foods in Indian cuisine. While potato is a significant part of the northern cuisine, in the south, it’s coconut that is part of almost every dish. North Indian foods are prepared with mustard and peanut oil, whereas south Indian foods are prepared with coconut and sesame (gingelly) oil. South Indian foods are flavoured with curry leaves.
French: French cuisine is renowned for its delicate nuance and affluent flavours. Lavender, olive oil, honey, garlic are some of the major ingredients used in French food. Hot chocolate, pasta and yoghurt also find a prominent place in French cuisine. A meal often consists of three courses: hors d’œuvre or entrée (introductory course, sometimes soup), plat principal (main course) and fromage (cheese course) or dessert, sometimes with a salad offered before the cheese or dessert.
Spanish: Sausages, stewed cod bean tortilla and tomato bread are common Spanish food items. Rice, spinach, eggplant, peach, lemon, almonds and orange are the most common ingredients used in Spanish cuisine. Spanish food also has potato tortillas and Gazpacho soup. Appetisers before lunch or dinner are common in the form of tapas (tiny rations).
Mexican: It is a composite cuisine used with native ingredients, as well as the elements brought by Spanish explorers. Spanish and other Europeans introduced chicken, pork, herbs, cheese into Mexican cuisine. Tortillas made out of corn and wheat are a popular Mexican food item. Sweet potatoes, peanuts, avocado, guava, tomato and chocolate also find their way into Mexican meals.
Turkish: Turkish cuisine is largely the heritage of Ottoman cuisine, which can be described as a fusion and refinement of central Asian, Caucasian, Middle Eastern, Mediterranean and Balkan cuisines. Turkish cuisine has, in turn, influenced other neighbouring cuisines, including those of western Europe. The Ottomans fused various culinary traditions of their realm with influences from Middle Eastern cuisines, along with traditional Turkic elements from central Asia (such as yoghurt), creating a vast array of specialities—many with strong regional associations.
Japanese: Cooked vegetables in broth, pickled vegetables and fish form part of the Japanese foods. Red bean paste is a major ingredient used in Japanese cuisine. Sushi is a delicious Japanese food that has gained immense popularity. You can’t avoid sushi, but Japanese cooking is so much more. Based on noodles or rice, Japanese meals are usually made of seafood, tofu or vegetables. Ingredients are grilled, simmered, deep-fried, steamed, dressed or served raw (sashimi).
Lebanese: It consists of an enormous quantity of wholegrain, starches, vegetables, fruits, fresh fish, etc. Olive oil and garlic are the major ingredients used in Lebanese cuisine. The foods are often seasoned with lemon juice. Douma (cooked lamb and yoghurt along with rice), hammana (a stew made out of kidney beans) are some of the popular Lebanese foods. A typical mezze consists of an elaborate variety of hot and cold dishes, and may include salads such as tabbouleh and fattoush together with dips such as hummus, baba ghanoush or moutabal and kebbeh.
Chinese: Chinese cuisine is a popular cuisine among a number of food lovers. The staple food comprises noodles, rice, sauces, vegetables and seasonings. Cantonese, Anhui, Jiangsu, Hunan, Szechuan, Shandong and Zhejiang are some of the regional cuisines. Most of the traditional cooking procedures involve steaming, stewing and frying. Dim sum and pecking duck are popular dishes.
Italian: Italian cuisine is regarded as one of the oldest cuisines on the globe, with its origins dating back to the fourth century. Wine and cheese play a prominent role in the cuisine. Tortellini and ravioli are some of the major ingredients found in it. Tomatoes and basil, olive oil and Prosciutto de Parma are typical Italian products. Coffee, particularly espresso, is another significant item in Italian cuisine. Italians are also known for their fondness for desserts like cheese, cake, ice cream, fruit, sweets and cookies.
