Coronavirus June 18 Updates: India recorded yet another single-day spike on Saturday as the daily case count of new coronavirus infections crossed 13,000-mark today. The health ministry data shows that this is the first time after 113 days that India has seen more than 13,000 cases in a span of 24 hours. Here are the latest pandemic updates that you should know:

The government records show that India logged 13,216 fresh Covid-19 infections in the last 24 hours. The country saw 23 Covid deaths, the official records show.

The more troubling trend is the sharp spike in active case count. The present tally is nearing 70,000-mark. The health ministry’s morning bulletin shows 68,108 active cases across India at the moment. While the daily positivity rate stands at 2.73 per cent, the weekly positivity rate has been recorded at 2.47 per cent, the Centre’s records show.

Meanwhile, research by Chinese scientists has been reported by the Nature magazine that states that new sub-lineages of the Omicron variant have the ability to evade the antibodies that are present in vaccinated individuals, who have been infected by the BA.1 variant and the original novel coronavirus. In simple terms, the new mutations can bypass the immunity developed via Covid shots or pervious infections.
