Coronavirus Omicron cases in India, COVID-19 vaccine registrations Dec 12 Highlights: The threats of the new Omicron variant of coronavirus, still looms large as India added another case to the tally but on the brighter side also witnessed its first recovery in Maharashtra. Moreover, fifteen people infected with the Omicron variant of the coronavirus in India have now tested negative for Sars-CoV-2, and were discharged from government hospitals in Rajasthan and Maharashtra on Friday, health officials in the two states said.

A 35-year-old man with travel history to Zimbabwe and South Africa has tested positive for Omicron, becoming the second patient of the new COVID-19 variant in Delhi, sources said on Saturday. He is admitted at the LNJP Hospital and only has weakness, they added. He returned to India from Zimbabwe and had even travelled to South Africa, the sources said, adding that he is fully vaccinated.

With 7,774 people testing positive for coronavirus infection in last 24 hours India’s COVID-19 tally climbed to 3,46,90,510. The number of active cases declined to 92,281, lowest in 560 days, while death count mounted to 4,75,434 with the addition of 306 new fatalities, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated at 8 am.

The number of people who tested Covid-19 positive on arrival from overseas, including from from “at-risk” and “non-risk” countries to Tamil Nadu till date have tested positive for the Delta variant.

Omicron: Strict curbs imposed in Maharashtra

The Maharashtra state government banned large gatherings and imposed other restrictions within Mumbai. The state has the highest cases with the new SARS-CoV-2 ‘variant of concern’ in the country till date.

The new restrictions within the commissionerate limits bans rallies or protest marches involving a gathering of people and vehicles over the next two days. The Deputy Commissioner of Police Operations) informed PTI that the restrictions will be in force for 48 hours i.e over the weekend to ‘prevent danger to human life from new variant’ as well as to ensure there is no breach in law and order “against the backdrop of violence that took place in Amravati, Malegaon and Nanded” he said.

Chhattisgarh’s COVID-19 tally reached 10,07,212 on Sunday as 25 cases were detected, while the death toll remained unchanged at 13,594, an official said. The recovery count stood at 9,93,239 after six people were discharged from hospitals and 14 completed home isolation during the day, leaving the state with an active tally of 379, he said. “Durg recorded four new cases followed by three in Raigarh and two in Korba. No fresh cases were reported in 17 districts, including Raipur. With 13,110 samples being examined during the day, the number of tests conducted so far went up to 1,45,36,917,” he added. Coronavirus Live Tracker: Karnataka records 330 Covid-19 cases, 4 deaths

Karnataka on Sunday logged 330 fresh COVID-19 cases and four deaths taking the cumulative infections and fatalities to 30,00,435 and 38,257. In its COVID-19 bulletin, the health department said 304 people were discharged, taking the total number of recoveries to 29,54,817 while the active cases stood at 7,328. Bengaluru Urban remained the major contributor of COVID cases as 205 fresh infections and three deaths were reported in the city. Other districts too saw new cases including 40 in Kodagu, 15 in Dakshina Kannada, 13 in Mysuru and 11 in Shivamogga. Apart from Bengaluru, one death was recorded in Bidar. There were zero fatalities in 29 districts. The positivity rate for the day was 0.27 per cent and the case fatality rate was 1.21 per cent. A total of 1,18,696 samples were tested in the state including 1,03,516 RT-PCR tests on Sunday, taking the cumulative number of specimens examined so far to 5.46 crore. The state achieved 63,870 inoculations taking the total vaccinations done so far to 8.03 crore. (PTI)

Coronavirus Live Tracker: Mumbai sees 187 new Covid cases, two deaths

Mumbai’s coronavirus caseload grew to 7,65,297 as 187 persons tested positive for the infection on Sunday, while its fatality count rose by two to 16,357, the civic body said. With 219 patients getting discharge from hospitals, the city’s recovery figure reached 7,44,589, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said. There are 1,774 active COVID-19 cases in Mumbai. The two patients who died during the day were male and above the age of 60. They had co-morbidities, it said. A total of 40,031 people were tested in the metropolis on Sunday, which raised the cumulative test count to 1,28,85,717. Mumbai’s recovery rate is 97 per cent and its case doubling rate is 2,528 days, the BMC added. (PTI)

Coronavirus Live Tracker: Telangana logs 146 new cases to its Covid-19 tally

Telangana on Sunday recorded 146 fresh coronavirus cases taking the total infection count to 6,78,288 while the toll climbed to 4,007 with two more fatalities. The number of active cases in the state stood at 3,846, a state government bulletin said. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) accounted for the most number of cases with 72, followed by Ranga Reddy 20. A total of 189 people recovered from the disease, taking the cumulative number till date to 6,70,435, the bulletin said. As many as 26,625 samples were tested today, taking the total number tested till date to 2.90 crore. The Case Fatality Rate in Telangana was 0.59 per cent whereas the recovery rate was 98.84 per cent. (PTI)

Coronavirus Live Tracker: Maharashtra’s Covid-19 caseload rises by 704, death toll by 16

Maharashtra reported 704 new coronavirus positive cases on Sunday, taking its infection tally to 66,43,883, while the death of 16 patients pushed the toll to 1,41,259, the state health department said. A total of 669 patients were discharged during the day, which raised the state’s overall recovery count to 64,92,504. There are 6,441 active cases in the state at present. Maharashtra’s COVID-19 recovery rate stands at 97.72 per cent, while the fatality rate is 2.12 per cent, it said. As 1,16,307 people were tested during the day, the cumulative test count of the state rose to 6,68,75, 975. Mumbai city reported 188 new cases and two deaths. Coronavirus Live Tracker: West Bengal logs 583 new COVID-19 cases, 6 more deaths

West Bengal on Sunday reported 583 new COVID-19 cases, 45 less than the previous day, a health department bulletin said. Six more fatalities caused by the virus, three less than Saturday, have taken the overall death toll to 19,600, the bulletin said. The COVID-19 tally in the state is now 16,23,191. Of the fresh cases, Kolkata and North 24 Parganas accounted for 217 and 108 respectively, it added. As many as 15,96,043 patients have been cured of the infection, including 591 during the day. Four coronavirus deaths were recorded in North 24 Parganas and two in Kolkata. The state is now left with 7,548 active cases, 14 less than the previous day, while the daily positivity rate is 1.59 per cent. In the last 24 hours, 36,573 samples were tested for COVID-19 in the state, taking the total number of such clinical examinations to 2,07,59,150. (PTI)

Haryana reported zero death due to COVID-19 and 30 new cases on Sunday, pushing the total case count to 7,72,019, officials said. According to the health department’s daily bulletin, the death toll remained unchanged at 10,055. Of the new cases, Gurugram district reported the maximum at 17, followed by Panchkula (7) and Faridabad (5). The number of registered COVID-19 cases in Russia now exceeds 10 million, data from the government’s coronavirus task showed on Sunday, but the latest wave of the pandemic has lost its momentum and the number of deaths is declining. The number of daily infections and the death toll have both been on the decline recently after Russia recorded its deadliest month of the pandemic so far in October, according to Reuters calculations. On Sunday, Russia reported 29,929 new COVID-19 infections in the last 24 hours, its lowest single-day case tally since Oct. 13, taking the headline official number of infections since the start of the pandemic to 10,016,896. Russia also reported 1,132 deaths related to the virus, its lowest since late October. The total official death toll in Russia stands at 289,483. Coronavirus Live Tracker: Puducherry adds 15 fresh COVID-19 cases, overall tally rises to 1,29,217

The union territory of Puducherry reported 15 new coronavirus cases during the last 24 hours pushing the overall tally to 1,29,217, a senior official of Department of Health said on Sunday. No fresh fatalities were reported from any of the four regions in the union territory and the death toll remained at 1,877. The 15 cases were identified at the end of the examination of 2,049 samples and were spread over Karaikal (seven) and Puducherry and Mahe (four each), Director of the Health Department G Sriramulu said in a release. No fresh infections were reported from Yanam, an enclave of Puducherry in Andhra Pradesh, in the last 24 hours. The number of active cases stood at 208 which included 47 patients undergoing treatment in hospitals while the remaining 161 were in home isolation. The Director said 37 patients recovered and were discharged during the last 24 hours ending 10 AM Sunday as the overall recoveries rose to 1,27,132. He said the test positivity rate was 0.73 per cent while the fatality and recovery rates were 1.45 per cent and 98.39 per cent respectively. The Health Department has so far administered 13,06,706 doses which included 7,96,397 first doses while the remaining 5,10,309 were second doses, he added. (PTI)

Coronavirus Live tracker: UK opens up COVID boosters to all over 30s in Omicron fight

Britain’s health authorities said on Sunday that bookings for the COVID booster vaccines for everyone aged 30 and over in England will be open from Monday, as one of the key actions aimed at tackling the rapid spread of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 in the country. There are around 7.5 million people aged 30 to 39, and 3.5 million of those are eligible for boosters from Monday, NHS England said. It comes as early analysis shows booster jabs being effective against the Omicron variant, the first cases of which have started being hospitalised now. Australia said on Sunday it will shorten the wait time for people to receive a COVID-19 booster following a rise in cases of the Omicron variant.Australia had previously said it would offer the booster to everyone over 18 who had had their second dose of the vaccine six months earlier.But with rising cases of the Omicron variant, Health Minister Greg Hunt said the time interval will be shortened to five months after the second dose.”A booster dose five or more months after the second dose will make sure that the protection from the primary course is even stronger and longer lasting and should help prevent spread of the virus,” Hunt said in an emailed statement.”Data from Israel shows boosters supporting reductions in the rate of infection in eligible age groups, severe disease in those aged over 40 years and deaths in those over 60 years.”Australia will use both vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna in its booster programme. Two industrial units in the Daman Union Territory have been shut for allegedly flouting the official order of mandatory two-dose vaccination against COVID-19 for all the employees, officials said on Sunday. The managements of the industrial units have been directed to ensure that all their workers are fully vaccinated against COVID-19, in the absence of which they will not be allowed to function, they said. “During an inspection, it was found that the two units operating at Dabhel in Daman district were operating even as all their employees were not fully vaccinated. Coronavirus Live tracker: First Omicron case detected in Andhra Pradesh

A 34-year old foreign traveller, who came from Ireland, tested positive for Covid-19 with the latest strain Omicron, the first such case detected in Andhra Pradesh, the state Health Department said here on Sunday. The person, who first landed in Mumbai, was tested and found negative for Covid-19. He was then allowed to travel onward to Visakhapatnam on November 27. “On conducting a second RT-PCR test in Vizianagaram, he tested positive for Covid-19. His sample was then sent to the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology in Hyderabad for genome sequencing and the result came out as Omicron positive,” the Public Health Director said in a release. The person, however, did not have any symptoms and a re-test on December 11 showed he was Covid-19 negative. – PTI

Reacting to the statement of UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) that booster dose of Covishield vaccine effective against Omicron and a third booster dose of COVID-19 vaccine provides 70-75 per cent protection against symptomatic infection from the Omicron variant, the virologists and epidermalogists underlined that booster doses of any vaccine (except live attenuated like oral polio vaccine or OPV, measles) exponentially raises antibody level. A Brazilian Supreme Court justice ruled Saturday that all travellers arriving in Brazil must present a vaccine passport documenting they have been vaccinated against the coronavirus. The decision from Lus Roberto Barroso challenges a more lenient rule announced by the government of President Jair Bolsonaro, who has opposed mandatory immunization against the virus that can cause COVID-19. Barroso’s ruling must be reviewed by all 11 judges of the Supreme Court next week. With the addition of 86 new cases of coronavirus, the infection count in Maharashtra’s Thane district has gone up to 5,70,460, an official said on Sunday. These new cases were reported on Saturday, he said. No new fatality was recorded, he said, adding that the death toll in the district remained unchanged at 11,593. The COVID-19 mortality rate in Thane stood at 2.03 per cent, he said. Coronavirus Live tracker: Twelve fresh COVID-19 cases recorded in Ladakh

Ladakh’s tally of COVID-19 cases increased to 21,804 on Sunday with 12 fresh infections, officials said. The death toll remained at 215 and of these, 157 deaths have been reported from Leh and 59 from Kargil, they said. The number of active cases in the Union Territory has dropped to 212 — 196 in Leh and 16 in Kargil — from 220 the previous day, according to the officials. All the 12 new cases were detected in Leh, they said. The officials said that 18 patients were discharged from hospitals in Leh and two in Kargil, taking the total number of recoveries in Ladakh to 21,377. PTI

Coronavirus Live tracker: Arunachal logs one new COVID case, tally at 55,305

Arunachal Pradesh on Sunday registered one new COVID-19 case, four less than the previous day, with the tally rising to 55,305, a health department official said. The death toll remained at 280 as no fresh fatality due to the infection was reported in the past 24 hours, State Surveillance Officer Dr Lobsang Jampa said. At least 54,997 people, including five since Saturday, have recuperated from the disease, he said. The recovery rate among coronavirus patients in the state remained at 99.44 per cent. The northeastern state now has 28 active cases, Jampa said. The Capital Complex Region, comprising Itanagar, Naharlagun, Nirjuli and Banderdewa areas, has the highest number of active cases at 10, followed by West Kameng at nine, Tawang at four, Namsai at three, Lower Dibang Valley and East Siang at one each. – PTI

Coronavirus Live Tracker: J&K records 182 new cases of Coronavirus

Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday recorded 182 new cases of coronavirus, taking the infection tally to 3,38,745, while one more death due to the virus was reported in the last 24 hours, officials said. Of the new cases, 33 were from the Jammu division and 149 from the Kashmir division, they said. Srinagar district recorded the highest of 66 cases followed by 26 from Kupwara district. There are 1,595 active cases in the Union Territory, while the number of recovered patients is 3,32,659, they said. The death toll due to the pandemic stands at 4,491, officials said. Meanwhile, there were 49 confirmed cases of mucormycosis (black fungus) in the Union Territory as no fresh case was reported since Friday evening. (PTI)

The COVID-19 tally in Madhya Pradesh rose to 7,93,337 on Saturday with the addition of 15 cases, a health official said. The death toll remained unchanged at 10,529 with no new fatality reported, the official said. More than 6.89 lakh people were vaccinated during the day in MP, he said. After discharging 13 people, the number of recoveries in MP increased to 7,82,653, leaving the state with 155 active cases. With 61,387 new tests, the number of samples examined in MP so far went up to 2,25,06,931, the official added. A total of 9,41,55,671 COVID-19 vaccine doses have been administered so far in MP, including 6,89,200 on Saturday, an official release said. Coronavirus Live Tracker: Five new cases take Nagaland’s Covid-19 tally to 32,151

Nagaland on Saturday reported five new COVID-19 cases, two more than the previous day, with the tally rising to 32,151, a health department official said. The death toll remained at 699 as no fresh fatality due to the infection was registered in the last 24 hours, he said. Nagaland now has 101 active cases, while 30,284 people, including nine during the period, have recovered from the disease so far. At least 1,067 patients have migrated to other states, the official said. State Immunisation Officer Dr Ritu Thurr said 13,12,041 doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered to 7,50,238 people till Friday. (PTI)

Coronavirus Live Tracker: Delhi reports 52 Covid-19 cases

The national capital recorded zero death due to COVID-19 and 52 fresh cases in a day with a positivity rate of 0.09 per cent, according to data shared by the city health department on Saturday. The total number of cases reported in Delhi so far stood at 14,41,662. Over 14.16 lakh patients have recovered from the infection. The death toll due to the coronavirus infection in Delhi remained at 25,100. Two deaths due to the coronavirus infection have been recorded in December so far. Seven COVID-19 deaths were reported here in November this year, the highest count of fatalities due to the coronavirus infection in the last three months, according to official data. Delhi had recorded four Covid deaths in October and five in September. The case positivity rate stood at 0.09 per cent on Saturday, according to the health bulletin. A total of 57,144 tests were conducted a day ago, it said. On Friday, 41 cases were recorded at a positivity rate of 0.07 per cent, while on Thursday, 55 cases were recorded with a positivity rate of 0.09 per cent. On Wednesday, 65 cases were recorded with a positivity rate of 0.11 per cent. (PTI)

Coronavirus Live Tracker: Karnataka records 320 Covid-19 cases, two deaths

Karnataka’s COVID tally crossed the 30 lakh mark with 320 fresh COVID-19 cases whereas two deaths took the cumulative fatalities to 38,257, the health department said on Saturday. The state also achieved another feat of over eight crore vaccinations including first and second dose with 2,80,534 vaccinations today. In its COVID bulletin, the department said the state has reported 30,00,105 infections since the outbreak of COVID last year. The department added that 317 people were discharged, taking the total number of recoveries to 29,54,513. Active cases stood at 7,306. Bengaluru Urban remained the major contributor of COVID cases as both the deaths took place in the city and 190 fresh infections were reported. Other districts too had fresh cases including 21 in Kodagu, 20 Dakshina Kannada, 17 in Hassan, 14 in Mysuru and 10 in Chikkamagaluru. There were zero fatalities in 30 districts. While 10 districts reported zero infections and zero fatalities, 15 districts had cases in single digits. The positivity rate for the day was 0.30 per cent and the case fatality rate was 0.62 per cent. A total of 1,05,978 samples were tested including 89,718 RT-PCR tests on Saturday, taking the cumulative number of specimens examined to 5.44 crore. (PTI)

Coronavirus Live tracker: Man with travel history to Zimbabwe, S Africa found Omicron positive

A 35-year-old man with travel history to Zimbabwe and South Africa has tested positive for Omicron, becoming the second patient of the new COVID-19 variant in Delhi, sources said on Saturday. He is admitted at the LNJP Hospital and only has weakness, they added. He returned to India from Zimbabwe and had even travelled to South Africa, the sources said, adding that he is fully vaccinated. The man belongs to Andhra Pradesh and was admitted to the hospital on December 5. The LNJP Hospital has been designated for treatment of patients infected with the new Omicron variant of the coronavirus. The hospital has 35 patients currently. Till Friday night, there were 31 patients admitted to the hospital while four patients were brought there on Saturday, according to sources. On Sunday, a 37-year-old fully vaccinated man who arrived in Delhi from Tanzania became the first patient of Omicron in the national capital. The patient, a resident of Ranchi, had travelled from Tanzania to Doha and from there to Delhi on a Qatar Airways flight on December 2. He stayed in Johannesburg, South Africa, for a week. The person has mild symptoms. (PTI)

Coronavirus Live Tracker: Goa sees 44 new COVID-19 cases; no fresh fatalities

As many as 44 people tested positive for coronavirus, while none died of the infection in Goa on Saturday, an official from the state health department said. With this, the tally of infections reached 1,79,419 and the toll stood at 3,482, the official said. At least 58 patients were discharged from hospitals during the day, rising the count of recoveries to 1,75,501, leaving the coastal state with 436 active cases, he said. With the addition of 3,131 swab samples tested during the day, the total number of tests conducted in the state has gone up to 15,76,114, the official added. Coronavirus Live Tracker: Telangana records 188 new Covid-19 cases, one death

Telangana on Saturday logged 188 new COVID-19 cases, pushing the tally to 6,78,142, while the death toll rose to 4,005 with one more fatality. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) accounted for the most number of cases with 78, followed by Hanumakonda (21) and and Karimnagar (15) districts, a state government bulletin said, providing details as of 5.30 PM today. It said 193 people recovered from the infectious disease today. The cumulative number of recoveries till date was 6,70,246. The number of active cases was 3,891, the bulletin said. It said 35,978 samples were tested today and the total number of samples tested till date was 2,89,91,423. The samples tested per million population were 7,78,920. The case fatality and recovery rates in the state were at 0.59 per cent and 98.83 per cent, respectively. (PTI)
