New Coronavirus Cases in India Live Updates: India has reported 3,14,835 new COVID-19 cases, 2,104 deaths and 1,78,841 discharges in the last 24 hours, as per Union Health Ministry. The country reported a record high of 2,95,041 new COVID cases and 2023 deaths on Wednesday with the oxygen crisis precipitated by the second wave of Covid-19 in India appearing to be intensified with complaints of shortage from several states. On Thursday (April 22, 2021), the Supreme Court of India took suo motu cognisance on prevailing COVID-19 situation in India and issued notice to the Centre. Chief Justice of JI said, “we have 4 issues primarily in mind – supply of oxygen, supply of essential drugs, manner of vaccination are among them. Senior Advocate, Harish Salve will represent as the amicus curiae, we want to see a national plan on this issue.”

PM Narendra Modi cancelled his scheduled West Bengal visits and will be chair high-level meetings on Friday in view of the COVID-19 situation in the country. He took stock of the situation and called for using innovative ways to provide oxygen support to health facilities.

In Maharashtra on Wednesday, tragedy struck when 24 patients on ventilator support suffocated to death due to leakage in an oxygen storage tank.

Free vaccines: Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Chhattisgarh are the latest states to announce free COVID vaccination for all aged above 18 years. Earlier, Uttar Pradesh and Assam had announced a similar decision. Officials say that the vaccines reduce the risk of infection and prevent death and severe infection. NITI Aayog member (Health) Dr V K Paul on Wednesday appealed to the states, hospitals and nursing homes to ensure rational use of oxygen as it was “life-saving” drug for the coronavirus infected patients.

    Coronavirus India Live News: 6 hospitals have exhausted their oxygen supply, 7 others have under 5 hrs left: Sisodia to Vardhan

    Six hospitals in the national capital have exhausted their oxygen supply while seven others have less than five hours of oxygen left, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia told Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan on Thursday. In a letter to the Union health minister, Sisodia pointed out that six hospitals -- Saroj Super Speciality Hospital, Shanti Mukund, Tirath Ram Shah Hospital, UK Nursing Home, Rathi Hospital and Santom Hospital, have exhausted their oxygen supply. The hospitals that have less than five hours of oxygen supply include Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital, BLK Hospital, Holy Family Hospital, Okhla,  Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, Max Superspeciality Hospital, Patparganj, Venketeshwara Hospital and Sri Balaji Action Medical Institute, Sisodia pointed out. "Police and senior officials of the administration in Uttar Pradesh and Haryana are stalling the tankers carrying oxygen, delaying the tankers from reaching Delhi hospitals on time," Sisodia said in the letter. "I urge you to ensure that the oxygen allocated for Delhi by the Centre reaches there without any delay to save lives of the patients," he added. (PTI)

    Coronavirus India Live News: FinMin asks states to vaccinate banking staff on priority basis

    The finance ministry has asked state governments to treat bankers on priority basis for COVID-19 vaccination when the third phase begins from May 1. Earlier this week, the government decided to open COVID vaccination for all adults above the age of 18 years starting May 1 with the pandemic surging to record highs and fatalities rising with each passing day.  The vaccine makers have been directed to reserve 50 per cent doses for the Centre and remaining for states and the open market. The Department of Financial Services, in a letter addressed to chief secretaries of states, said the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs on Management of COVID-19 pandemic and related issues, in its 229th report, appreciated the efforts and pain taken by the banking sector for providing uninterrupted service during the COVID-19 outbreak and consequent lockdown.     Coronavirus India Live News: Over 13.5 crore COVID vaccine doses administered in India

    The total number of vaccinations against COVID-19 has crossed 13.5 crore in the country with more than 30 lakh vaccine doses administered on Thursday till 8 pm, the health ministry said. The total number of COVID-19 vaccine doses administered in the country stood at 13,53,46,729, according to a provisional report compiled at 8 pm. The beneficiaries include 92,41,384 healthcare workers (HCWs) who have taken the first dose, 59,03,368 HCWs who have taken the second dose, 1,17,27,708 frontline workers (FLWs) who have received the first dose and 60,73,622 FLWs who have taken the second dose. Besides, 4,55,10,426 and 18,91,160 beneficiaries in the 45-60 age group have taken the first and the second dose respectively, while 4,85,01,906 and 64,97,155 people aged above 60 have been administered the first and the second dose.     Coronavirus India Live News: CSIR lab develops tech to meet oxygen demand, minimise storage risks

    The CSIR on Thursday said an 'oxygen enrichment' technology has been developed by one of its laboratories to meet the oxygen demand and minimise the supply chain problem of transportation and storage risks related to oxygen cylinders amid the COVID-19 outbreak. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research's (CSIR) Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute (CMERI) has transferred the technology virtually to M/s Apollo Computing Laboratories (P) Ltd, Kushaiguda, Hyderabad. As the nation grapples with the surge of coronavirus cases, oxygen therapy is recommended for severe illness caused by the infection.     Realising the importance and need of psychological care along with the physical treatment for COVID-19 patients, three premier institutions of the country have come together to develop a protocol for their psychosocial rehabilitation. The release of the protocol is scheduled to take place on Friday. The three eminent institutions are -- the Central Council for Research in Yoga and Naturopathy (CCRYN), an autonomous body of the Ministry of Ayush, the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS), Bengaluru and the Swami Vivekananda Yoga Anusandhana Samsthana (S-VYASA), the Ayush ministry said in a statement.     Coronavirus India Live News: 530 new cases in Gautam Buddh Nagar

    The COVID-19 death toll in Uttar Pradesh's Gautam Buddh Nagar rose to 129 on Thursday with 11 more fatalities, the highest in a day till date, while  530 new cases pushed the infection tally to 32,133, official data showed. The district's active caseload reached 4,088 from 4,009 the previous day, according to the figures released by the UP Health Department for a 24-hour period. On the brighter side, 444 patients got discharged during the period, taking the overall recoveries to 28,450, the fifth highest in the state, it showed. (PTI)

    Coronavirus India Live News: Fresh Covid-19 restrictions come into force in Maharashtra

    Fresh restrictions on travel, attendance in offices and wedding functions announced by the Maharashtra government to check the COVID-19 spread came into force on Thursday night. Maharashtra, facing an unprecedented surge in coronavirus cases, is already under severe restrictions since April 14 and the fresh "lockdown-like" curbs were announced on Wednesday to break the chain of viral transmission in the state. Prohibitory orders, banning assembly of five or more people at once place, are in force till 7 am on May 1, while non-essential activities are not being allowed. Essential services, including grocery stores, are permitted to operate only between between 7 and 11 am. The new restrictions under the government's `Break-the-Chain' programme came into force at 8 pm on Thursday and will remain effective till 7 am on May 1. (PTI)

    Coronavirus India Live News: Private sector looking to pool demand for vaccines procurement

    Private sector in India is looking to pool their demand for effective procurement of vaccines to ensure uninterrupted access to the lifesaving vaccines across the country, healthcare and industry federations said on Thursday. The private sector is also aiming to work collaboratively to tide over supply side challenges and join hands with the government to scale up last mile delivery of vaccines, pandemic surveillance and hospitalisation care, apex healthcare federation, NATHEALTH said in a statement. The federations also urged the government to ensure that there is consistency in vaccine administration guidelines across states through standard operating guidelines for engagement with the private sector, it added. The government on Monday had said that everyone above 18 years of age will be eligible to get vaccinated against COVID-19 from May 1, as it liberalised the vaccination drive to allow states, private hospitals and industrial establishments to procure the doses directly from manufacturers.     Coronavirus India Live News: Labs be not pressured into giving test reports in max 36 hours

    The Delhi High Court on Thursday said that accredited laboratories carrying out COVID-19 testing ought not to be pressured into delivering reports within 24-36 hours as this would lead to them turning away people or refuse to take more samples. A bench of Justices Vipin Sanghi and Rekha Palli said that they have heard there was an order of the Delhi government directing the labs to give the final reports maximum within 36 hours of taking the sample or face action. The bench said such a measure was "counterproductive" and "uncalled for". It noted that apparently due to the said order of the Delhi government the number of tests being carried out has gone down since April 19. (PTI)

    Coronavirus India Live News: Bengal reports highest 1-day surge of 11,948 COVID cases, 56 deaths

    West Bengal on Thursday registered the highest single-day spike of 11,948 COVID-19 cases, taking the tally beyond the 7-lakh mark, the health department said in its bulletin. The death toll also went up to 10,766 as 56 more patients succumbed to the disease, it said.  The tally of 11,948 fresh infections pushed the state's coronavirus caseload to 7,00,904. In the last 24 hours, 6,590 patients recovered from coronavirus, while the number of active cases in the state currently is 68,798, the bulletin said. (PTI)

    Coronavirus India Live News:  Covid care centre with 500 beds to be reopened in Delhi amid surge in cases

    A COVID care centre equipped with 500 oxygen beds will be restarted in Delhi amid a surge in coronavirus cases, and border guarding force ITBP has been again entrusted to run it, officials said on Thursday. An order issued by the Union Home Ministry said the Delhi government has "sought assistance to re-operationalise" the Sardar Patel COVID care centre (SPCCC) with 500 oxygen beds, that was first created last year at the Radha Soami Beas campus located in south Delhi's Chhattarpur area. "Keeping in view the above request, it has been decided to provide adequate number of medical officers and para-medical staff to man 500 oxygenated beds at SPCCC." "ITBP is designated as a nodal force for operation of the SPCCC...ITBP may draw the required medical manpower (doctors and paramedics), if needed, from other central armed police forces (CAPFs) also," the order said.     Israel issued a travel advisory on Thursday warning Israelis, including those who have recovered from or been vaccinated against COVID-19, to refrain from travelling to India, Ukraine, Ethiopia, Brazil, South Africa, Mexico and Turkey because of high COVID morbidity rates in the seven countries. The statement from the Israeli health ministry also noted the presence of alarming COVID variants in the seven countries, and recommended that the public avoid all travel outside of Israel if possible, the Haaretz newspaper reported. The Health Ministry's Director-General Chezy Levy said that unvaccinated foreign workers and students from India must quarantine in state-run quarantine hotels, it said. (PTI)

    The Delhi High Court Thursday observed that the COVID-19 situation in the national capital has turned precarious with many hospitals running out of oxygen and directed the Centre to ensure the gas is supplied to the city as per the planned allocation and without any hindrances. "As it stands, we all know that this country is being run by God," observed an anguish bench of Justices Vipin Sanghi and Rekha Palli which was of the view that all measures should be taken for removing obstructions in the transportation of oxygen. If the government wants it can do anything and can even make "heaven meet earth," the bench, which heard the matter from 2 PM to 6:40 PM, said. (PTI)

    Coronavirus India Live News: MP's COVID-19 count grows by 12,384, death toll by 75

    Madhya Pradesh on Thursday reported 12,384 fresh coronavirus cases, which took its overall count to 4,59,195, the state health department said. On Wednesday, the state had reported its highest one-day spike of 13,107 cases. As 75 patients succumbed to the infection in the last 24 hours, the death toll reached 4,863. A total of 4,863 patients were discharged from hospitals in the last 24 hours, pushing the count of recoveries in Madhya Pradesh to 3,69,375, the department said. With 1,781 new cases, Indore's caseload went up to 96,330, while that of Bhopal rose to 75,405 with the addition of 1,729 cases. (PTI)

    Telangana reported 5,567 fresh COVID-19 cases, pushing the tally to over 3.73 lakh, while the toll rose to 1,899 with 23 more fatalities, the highest ever in a single day. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) accounted for the most number of cases with 989, followed by Rangareddy 437 and Medchal Malkajgiri 421, a government bulletin said on Thursday providing details as of 8 PM on April 21. The total number of cumulative cases stood at 3,73,468 while with 2,251 patients being cured, the total recoveries were at 3,21,788. (PTI)

    The government on Thursday said spending by corporates for setting up makeshift hospitals and temporary COVID-19 care facilities will be considered as CSR activities. Under the companies law, certain class of profitable entities are required to spend at least 2 per cent of their three-year annual average net profit towards Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). "It is further clarified that spending of CSR funds for setting up makeshift hospitals and temporary COVID care facilities is an eligible CSR activity...," the corporate affairs ministry said in a circular on Thursday.     Coronavirus India Live News: UP records highest single-day spike of 34,379 cases, 195 deaths

    A record single-day spike of 34,379 COVID-19 cases and 195 fatalities pushed Uttar Pradesh's infection tally to 9,76,765 and the death toll due to the disease to 10,541, the state government said on Thursday. As many as 16,514 patients recovered from the disease in the state in a span of 24 hours, taking the total count of recoveries to 7,06,414, Additional Chief Secretary, Health, Amit Mohan Prasad said in Lucknow.     Kerala reported 26,995 COVID-19 cases on Thursday, in the highest single-day surge so far, taking the infection count to 13,22,054 and those under treatment to over 1.5 lakh. As many as 6,370 have been cured of the infection, taking the total recoveries to 11,60,472. The toll has climbed to 5,028 with 28 additional deaths, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said. Ernakulam recorded the highest number of cases, accounting for 4,396 cases, followed by Kozhikode 3,372. Thrissur, Malappuram, Kottayam and Thiruvananthapuram reported over 2000 cases today, Vijayan told reporters in Thiruvananthapuram. (PTI)
