Samsung on Monday expanded its flagship Galaxy series by unveiling the S6 and the S6 Edge. The noteworthy part is is that both these smartphones have seen a significant contribution from the Indian research and development (R&D) centres, especially Bengaluru. The new phones will compete directly with Apple’s iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 plus.
Samsung Galaxy S6 has been priced between Rs 49,900 to Rs 61,900 while the Galaxy S6 Edge to cost between Rs 58,900 and Rs 70,900 – available from April 10.
4 things to look out for in the new devices —
1) Samsung has tried to bring down power consumption and yet keep the phone fast. At the same time it has tried to address charging time issues. Result: These devices use the world’s first 14 nanometer mobile processor with 64-bit platform which is faster yet consumes less power.
2) It uses a 3GB DDR4 RAM which can chew with double the force but needs less fuel. Used with processors that offer high clock speeds, a single package of LP-DDR4 memory will offer data transfer speeds of 17GBps (gigabytes per second), rising to 34GBps for 64-bit processors, said Linley Gwennap, founder and principal analyst at The Linley Group, in a research note this month. t also has a UFS 2.0 flash memory that provides higher performance and enhanced memory speed with lower power consumption. In addition, the 5.1-inch Quad HD Super AMOLED screen offers users a pixel density of 577ppi. And all of this explains the 2600mAH battery that feeds the devices.
3) With fully embedded WPC and PMA certified wireless charging technology, the devices are being touted by Samsung to set a new standard for universal wireless charging. “The devices will work with any wireless pad available in the market that supports WPC and PMA standards. The devices also sport incredibly fast wired charging, 1.5 times faster than the GALAXY S5, providing about 4 hours of usage after only 10 minutes of charging,” Manu Sharma, director at Samsung Mobile, India, said.
4) Both the S6 and S6 Edge come with ‘Find My Mobile’ feature which secures lost devices and protects personal information through a number of services, including the all new remotely controlled “Reactivation lock.” With an enhanced touch-type fingerprint scanner, it also provides quick authentication and saves encrypted data in secure device storage.
