Indus OS, an Indian brand and IRIS scanning technology provider Delta ID has announced the launch of an Aadhaar-authenticated operating system (OS) for users in India. It is the first ever Aadhaar-authenticated operating system, and it uses IRIS-biometric technology for secure identification and authentication. According to Rakesh Deshmukh, the co-founder and CEO of IndusOS, the partnership with Delta ID will bear fruit soon and the release of the Aadhaar-authenticated OS can be expected by this quarter. He said in a press release, “The OS will be released across our smartphone brand partners and we foresee 100 million users to be using the Aadhaar-authenticated OS by 2020.” Indus OS is a regional operating system and region-specific versions of the operating system have been launched in India & Bangladesh. 1. With the government pushing for higher adoption of Aadhaar-related services in the country, this innovation will give smartphone manufacturers an extra edge and act as a means to showcase their support towards government-led initiatives, according to Indus OS.

2. The unique software plus hardware combination captures the iris-ID information through a dedicated iris scanning camera built into the smartphone. The OS first encodes this information and then encrypts it with UID’s public key.
3. The encrypted information is sent to the UIDAI server for a match. UIDAI server then responds with a token ‘Yes’ or ‘No’. If the token is ‘Yes’, the consumer is authorised to utilise Aadhaar ID for a whole set of activities.
4. Apart from English, the operating system supports 12 Indian languages (Malayalam, Telugu, Tamil, Odia, Assamese, Punjabi, Kannada, Gujarati, Hindi, Urdu, Bengali, Marathi). The OS caters to the economic, social and regional diversity.
5. Indus OS has already partnered with six domestic smartphone brands, and companies like Micromax, Intex, Karbonn, Celkon and Swipe can soon bring the hardware to support the OS.

6. The OS is able to – a) translate/transliterate text between English and Indian languages, b) Text-to-speech in regional languages, c) autocorrect available for all the Indian languages, d) free SMS between Indus OS users.
7. The combination of IRIS scanning technology provided by b, and the consumer insights of Indus OS, the made-in-India operating system can enable faster adoption of Aadhaar-based services.
8. All Indus OS phones come with their own app marketplace called App Bazaar. App Bazaar is a regional app marketplace which provides you popular applications in your preferred regional languages.
9. The OS features an intuitive user experience and does not require emails and sign-ins. It makes the interface easy to use and discoverability of apps simpler.
10. Top app publishers in the Indus OS include Microsoft, Snapdeal, EAGames, TrueCaller, CricBuzz, Disney among many others, which will make it easier for people to adopt the smartphones which have this operating system.
