Microsoft and Amazon, two of the biggest technology companies in the world, have come together for a rare joint effort. The Big Tech companies, which usually compete with each other, are now united over a serious issue the growing housing crisis in Washington State in the USA. According to a full-page advertisement and an opinion article published in “The Seattle Times”, the tech giants are asking state leaders to act quickly.

Rare Moment of Unity

Microsoft and Amazon are rivals in areas like cloud computing and talent hiring. However, the worsening housing situation has pushed them to come together. Microsoft Vice Chair and President Brad Smith and Amazon’s Chief Global Affairs Officer David Zapolsky wrote the article together, calling the problem an “emergency” that needs immediate attention.

Their message is simple that if housing becomes too expensive and scarce, it will hurt not just workers, but the entire state’s economy.

Why Housing Has Become a Big Problem?

According to the two companies, Washington does not have enough homes to meet growing demand. As a result, prices have risen sharply, making it difficult for people to afford a place to live near their workplaces. Long commutes, traffic congestion, and stress on families are becoming common issues.

Brad Smith and David Zapolsky estimate that Washington may need close to one million new housing units over the next 20 years to keep up. That means around 50,000 homes must be built every year. Without changes in policy, they warn, the gap between demand and supply will continue to grow.

What Microsoft and Amazon Are Doing?

The companies point out that they are not just talking about the problem they are also investing money to help. Together, Microsoft and Amazon say they have committed $1.6 billion to support the construction and preservation of over 26,000 affordable homes in the region.

These housing projects are meant for teachers, nurses, service workers, and others who are struggling with rising rents not just tech employees. The companies believe strong communities are essential for long-term growth.

Message to Lawmakers

The joint appeal by both companies is mainly aimed at Washington state lawmakers. The companies are urging leaders to pass laws that make it easier and faster to build homes. They warn against rules that increase costs or delay construction, saying such policies can push developers and investors to other states.

Their final message is clear housing is no longer just a social issue it is an economic one. And when even competitors like Microsoft and Amazon agree on something, it shows just how serious the situation has become.
