Anthropic is ramping up its Indian operations in the wake of the big AI firms strengthening their Indian operations. Irina Ghose, a highly respected public policy and government relations expert with more than two decades of experience shaping India’s technology ecosystem, has now been appointed Managing Director for India at Anthropic. With Irina at the helm of the Indian operations, the American AI safety and research company could further expand its Claude family of large language models in the Indian AI scene.
The announcement marks a strategic milestone in India for Anthropic as it deepens its footprint in one of the world’s fastest-growing and most dynamic AI markets, where names like OpenAI and Meta are expanding rapidly to compete with Google’s presence. Ghose will lead Anthropic’s business development, strategic partnerships, policy advocacy, ecosystem engagement, and go-to-market efforts across India.
Irina Ghose: A peek into her early career
Ghose began her career in the technology sector after completing her education, quickly establishing herself as a key bridge between global tech companies and Indian policymakers. She spent several years at Intel India, where she played a crucial role in government relations, industry advocacy, and initiatives related to semiconductor policy, digital infrastructure, and emerging technologies.
She later joined Microsoft India, heading public policy efforts and leading engagement on cloud adoption, data protection, cybersecurity, AI governance, and digital inclusion. Her work helped shape Microsoft’s strategy during a transformative period for India’s tech and digital economy.
Prior to joining Anthropic, Ghose served as Director of Public Policy at Google India, where she led the company’s policy agenda on artificial intelligence, responsible AI frameworks, data privacy, digital payments, platform regulations, and inclusive growth. She was widely recognised for her balanced approach — advocating for innovation while ensuring alignment with national priorities and societal needs.
