WhatsApp is reportedly working on a major upgrade for its web version. The popular instant messaging app developed by Meta may soon allow users to make group voice and video calls directly from WhatsApp Web. This feature is already available on mobile phones and desktop apps, but browser users have been missing out for a long time.
If this update rolls out, users will no longer need to download the WhatsApp desktop app just to join or start a group call. Everything could work smoothly inside a web browser, making WhatsApp Web much more useful, especially for office and work users.
According to a WABetainfo report, WhatsApp seems hard at work to refine user experience on the web, possibly so it is at par with other platforms with the group calling update bringing it one step closer to providing features you’d normally associate with dedicated services like Zoom and Google Meet.
In the report, the popular WhatsApp features tracking website mentions that WhatsApp may choose to cap participant limit to 32 similar to the mobile version but it may start off with just 8 or 16 to ensure more stability. Either limit is yet to be confirmed by WhatsApp.
Group Calls Without Extra Apps
At present, WhatsApp Web only supports chatting and basic features. Group voice and video calls are not available unless you use the mobile app or the desktop software. With the upcoming update, users may be able to start and join group calls directly from Chrome, Edge or other browsers.
Reports suggest that WhatsApp could support up to 32 people in a single group call, similar to the mobile app. However, the company might begin with a smaller number of participants to ensure good call quality before expanding the limit.
Call Links
WhatsApp is also said to be testing call links for group calls on the web. This means users can create a link and share it with others, allowing them to join the call instantly. This feature will be useful for meetings, family calls or group discussions, as people won’t need repeated invites.
Users may also get the option to choose whether the link is for a voice call or a video call, making things clearer for participants.
Scheduled Calls
Another feature that could arrive with this update is call scheduling. This would allow users to plan calls in advance by setting a time, adding a name, and mentioning whether it’s a voice or video call. While the call won’t start automatically, everyone in the group will know when it’s supposed to happen.
This feature can be helpful for work meetings, online classes, or catching up with friends and family.
No Official Announcement Yet
It’s important to note that WhatsApp has not officially confirmed these features yet. The information comes from reports tracking upcoming updates and beta versions. Similar to most WhatsApp features, it may take some time before everything is released to all users.
Still, if these changes arrive, WhatsApp Web could become far more powerful and convenient than it is today.
