Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, recently shared a bold idea about the future. Speaking at the US–Saudi Investment Forum, Elon Musk said that in the next 10 to 20 years, people may no longer need to work to survive. He also suggested that money could eventually lose its importance.
According to Elon Musk, rapid growth in artificial intelligence and robotics will change how the world functions. Machines will be able to do most jobs better and faster than humans, making everyday goods and services easy to produce.
“My prediction is that work will be optional. It’ll be like playing sports or a video game or something like that,” Musk said. “If you want to work, [it’s] the same way you can go to the store and just buy some vegetables, or you can grow vegetables in your backyard. It’s much harder to grow vegetables in your backyard, and some people still do it because they like growing vegetables.”
Work Will Become a Choice
Elon Musk believes that work will no longer be something people are forced to do. Instead, it will become optional. People may choose to work only if they enjoy it, much like a hobby.
To explain his idea, Elon Musk compared future jobs to home gardening. Today, most people buy vegetables from shops because it’s easier. Only those who truly enjoy gardening grow their own food. In the same way, only people who truly enjoy working will continue to do so in the future.
Robots, including Tesla’s humanoid robot Optimus, will handle most physical and repetitive tasks. AI systems will manage planning, decision-making, and complex problem-solving.
A World Where Money Doesn’t Matter
Elon Musk also made a claim that money may become irrelevant. He explained that if machines can produce everything people need in large quantities, there would be no shortage of goods. In this world, traditional ideas of earning and spending money may no longer apply.
This idea is inspired by science-fiction stories that describe “post-scarcity” societies, where people live comfortably without worrying about income or prices.
Experts Are Not Fully Convinced
While Elon Musk’s vision is exciting, many experts remain cautious. They point out that robots are still expensive and difficult to deploy on a large scale. Many jobs, especially those requiring physical skills or human judgment, are not easy to automate.
Economists also warn that even if technology improves, society will need strong policies to ensure that wealth and resources are shared fairly. Without proper planning, automation could increase inequality instead of reducing it.
What Will Give Life Meaning?
Elon Musk’s idea also raises an important question if people don’t need to work, what will give their lives meaning? Many believe that work provides purpose, routine, and social connection.
Elon Musk agrees that humans will need to find new ways to stay motivated. Whether his predictions come true or not, one thing is clear AI and robotics are going to change how we live and work in the years ahead.
