IT minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar has lashed out at “a national political party” for spreading misinformation through deepfake videos. The reaction was in response to a deepfake video deceitfully portraying Amit Shah went viral on the internet. In the doctored video, the home Minister was seen advocating for scrapping all reservations.
Chandrasekhar said that he expected foreign vested interests to engage in spreading misinformation amid the ongoing elections, but India’s “oldest party” indulging in it was a “criminal act.”
“I would have expected foreign vested interests to misuse #deepfakes and spread #misinformation this election season. Today, to see that a national political party would resort to editing and spreading deepfake videos is truly surprising,” Chandrasekhar posted on X, the platform previously known as Twitter.
The Delhi Police has sent out notices to twelve more people for allegedly sharing a deepfake video of Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s speech on social media. A total of 17 people, including Telangana Chief Minister and Congress leader Revanth Reddy, have been summoned to appear before the case’s investigation officer.
The FIR was lodged by the Delhi Police’s Special Cell following a complaint from the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), under the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), regarding the edited video of Shah’s speech, which misrepresented his statements about reservations.
