OpenAI is preparing to enter the smartphone market with its first AI-focused device. Last month, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reported that the company was developing an AI-agent smartphone slated for mass production in 2028. Now, Kuo has suggested that the development is picking up pace, with mass production now likely to begin as early as the first half of 2027. If that happens, it would mark OpenAI’s move beyond software into building its own AI-focused hardware.

On the hardware front, the report says OpenAI has been in talks with chipmakers like Qualcomm and MediaTek, with MediaTek likely to take the lead. The phone could run on the Dimensity 9600 platform and may be built using TSMC’s advanced 2nm-class manufacturing process.

Reports suggest the device could pick up on things like your location, how you communicate, and your daily usage to make the AI more useful over time. There’s also talk that OpenAI may introduce subscription features, possibly building a wider ecosystem around its AI services.

The phone is expected to use LPDDR6 RAM and UFS 5.0 storage, which should help with faster performance and smoother handling of heavy tasks.

It may also include a dual NPU setup, allowing it to run multiple AI tasks at the same time, such as using a voice assistant while processing images in the background.
