Meta’s advanced AI glasses, the Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses, could be in trouble. AI smart glasses maker Solos Technology Ltd. has launched a federal patent infringement lawsuit against Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta Platforms and eyewear brand EssilorLuxottica. The lawsuit claims that Meta and EssilorLuxottica unlawfully incorporated Solos’ patented technologies into the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses series, which recently saw the release of the Gen 2 model.
The suit, filed in a Massachusetts federal court, accuses Meta and EssilorLuxottica of infringing five Solos patents covering the integration of audio systems, sensors, cameras, microphones, speakers, and voice-activated AI features into standard eyewear frames. Solos alleges that the Ray-Ban Meta Wayfarer Gen 1 launched 2023 was developed using concepts directly taken from its intellectual property, with the alleged infringement extending to second-generation models and the more recent Ray-Ban Meta Display glasses.
Solos sues Meta, EssilorLuxottica for patent infringement
Solos asserts that both companies had ample opportunity to learn about its technology through repeated interactions. Employees from EssilorLuxottica (including Oakley) reportedly viewed Solos prototypes and concepts during meetings and demonstrations in 2015, 2017, and 2019 — most notably receiving a testing pair in 2019. Additionally, Priyanka Shekar, a former Meta product manager, authored a research study on Solos’ smart glasses while at MIT Sloan, explicitly citing Solos patents before joining Meta.
Solos argues these contacts demonstrate willful infringement. The company is seeking damages in the “multiple billions of dollars” range, claiming the alleged copying has deprived it of critical market opportunities in the rapidly growing smart eyewear sector. Solos is also requesting a permanent injunction to stop further sales of the infringing Ray-Ban Meta products.
Market stakes for Meta glasses amid competition
The Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, developed through Meta’s partnership with EssilorLuxottica, have become one of the most successful consumer smart wearables, featuring built-in cameras for capturing photos and videos, open-ear audio speakers, hands-free voice controls, and AI capabilities powered by Meta’s Llama models. Solos positions itself as an early innovator in voice-first, AI-integrated eyewear and alleges that Meta and its partner unfairly capitalised on its foundational work.
Neither Meta nor EssilorLuxottica has issued a public response to the lawsuit yet.
