Meta’s former chief AI scientist Yann Lecun has strongly criticised Meta’s recent AI leadership decision. Yann who is referred to as The “godfather of AI” said in an interview to Financial Times that Meta’s newest AI boss, 29-year-old billionaire Alexandr Wang, was “young” and “inexperienced.”
He is therefore raising concerns about the company’s future plans in this fast-moving field.
What did Yann Le Cun say?
Yann LeCun, is one of the most respected names in artificial intelligence, and he recently spoke openly about why he left Meta after working there for many years. LeCun is widely known as an AI pioneer and played a key role in building Meta’s AI research team.
In his comments, Yann LeCun questioned Meta’s decision to appoint Alexandr Wang as its new AI chief. He described Alexander Wang as young and lacking enough experience to lead a large and complex AI research organisation. According to Yann LeCun, running an AI lab requires deep understanding of research culture, something that takes years to develop.
Who Is Alexandr Wang?
Alexandr Wang is the founder of Scale AI, a company that provides data services for training AI models. Meta recently invested heavily in Scale AI and brought Wang in to lead its new Superintelligence Labs. This unit is expected to focus on developing advanced AI systems that can compete with industry leaders.
While Alexander Wang is known as a successful entrepreneur, Yann LeCun believes that business success does not automatically translate into strong leadership in scientific research. He warned that researchers may struggle under leaders who do not have hands-on experience in AI science.
Disagreement Over AI Strategy
The criticism also highlights a larger disagreement about Meta’s AI direction. Yann LeCun has long argued that current AI models, especially those focused mainly on language, have serious limitations. He believes that simply improving language models will not lead to truly intelligent systems.
Meta, however, is investing heavily in this approach, hoping to catch up with rivals like OpenAI and Google. This difference in vision appears to be one of the main reasons behind Yann LeCun’s departure.
Challenges Ahead for Meta?
Yann LeCun also warned that Meta could face more internal problems if it does not rethink its strategy. Some employees have already left the company, and morale within AI teams has reportedly been affected by recent changes.
For Meta, the pressure is high. The company is spending billions on AI and needs strong leadership to justify that investment. Whether Alexandr Wang can earn the trust of Meta’s researchers and deliver results remains uncertain.
What is clear is that this public criticism has sparked a major debate about experience, leadership, and the future of artificial intelligence at one of the world’s biggest tech companies.
