Apple is slowly and steadily making some changes that could improve how iPhone users message people using Android phones. In the latest iOS 26.3 beta, Apple has added hidden system updates that point towards better support for a newer messaging standard called RCS. While users cannot see these changes yet, they suggest that Apple is preparing for a big upgrade in cross-platform texting.
According to a Mac Rumours report RCS support functionality is present in the new beta update.
Why RCS Is Important?
RCS, is referred to as Rich Communication Services, and is meant to replace old SMS text messages. It allows features like read receipts, typing indicators, and sending clear photos and videos. Apple first added RCS support to iPhones with iOS 18, but the experience has still been limited compared to iMessage.
One major issue however has been security. Messages sent between iPhones and Android phones using RCS are not fully encrypted. This means they are less private than iMessage chats. On Android phones, RCS already supports encryption in many cases, but this protection disappears when messaging an iPhone.
What are Apple’s Next Step With RCS?
The iOS 26.3 beta shows many signs that Apple may soon support RCS Universal Profile 3.0, which is the latest version of the standard. This upgrade could bring several useful features. These include end-to-end encryption, better message reactions, replies to specific messages, and even the ability to edit or delete sent texts.
These features would make texting between iPhones and Android phones feel more modern and closer to the iMessage experience. While Apple has earlier said it plans to support encrypted RCS in the future, it has not shared a clear timeline.
Mobile Carriers Still Play a Big Role!
Even if Apple enables this new RCS version, mobile carriers will also need to support it. This means the improved features may not be available everywhere at the same time. Some networks may roll it out quickly, while others could take longer depending on their infrastructure.
What This Means for Users?
If Apple fully adopts the newer RCS standard, iPhone users could enjoy better and safer conversations with Android users without switching to third-party apps like WhatsApp or Telegram. Messages would look better, work more smoothly, and feel more secure.
Although these changes are not live yet, the iOS 26.3 beta clearly shows that Apple is moving in the right direction. For users tired of basic cross-platform texting, meaningful improvements may finally be on the way. The update could arrive later this month.
iOS 26.3 Update Eligible iPhones
The update will be available for the iPhone 11, iPhone 12, iPhone 13, iPhone 14, iPhone 15, iPhone 16, and iPhone 17 series. However, Apple Intelligence features will be limited to models above the iPhone 15 Pro.
