WhatsApp as a search keyword has spiked dramatically in Google search interest across India over the past 24 hours, with peaks reaching the maximum score of 100 on Google Trends. This coincides with widespread discussions about a highly anticipated update. The feature, which allows existing group members to share recent chat history with new joiners, particularly on iPhone, addresses one of the most common pain points in group chats and is driving massive curiosity among the platform’s massive Indian user base.

The Google Trends graph for “WhatsApp” in India shows a steady climb through the day, building through multiple waves of interest with a sharp peak late in the evening, which again was followed by sustained high levels of hits. This surge aligns closely with reports and beta testing buzz around the new group chat history sharing capability, which has been long-requested by users frustrated by new members missing crucial context in active groups.

How WhatsApp’s new chat history sharing feature works

Currently rolling out to select beta testers via WhatsApp’s iOS TestFlight program (version details include recent updates like 26.2.10.73), the feature empowers group admins or members to selectively share past messages when adding someone new.

Opt-in Only: The option is off by default and never automatic, prioritizing user privacy and control.

Limited scope: Users can share up to 100 recent messages from the last 14 days, or choose a smaller subset.

How to use it:

– Open the group chat and select the ‘Add member’ option.

– After choosing the new contact, a prompt to “share recent messages” appears at the bottom of the screen.

– Select the desired number of messages (up to 100) and confirm—alerts may appear up to three times for extra confirmation on repeated uses.

Visual and Notification cues: Shared messages appear highlighted in a different colour for the new member to easily identify them. Existing group members receive a notification, and a system message is posted in the chat stating who shared the history (e.g., “User X shared recent messages with New Member”).

Privacy safeguards: No automatic sharing occurs, and the feature gives full control to the person initiating the add.

This brings WhatsApp closer in functionality to apps like Telegram, where new members can often view full histories, but with deliberate limits to protect sensitive conversations.

Why WhatsApp’s new group feature trends in India

India remains WhatsApp’s largest market, with hundreds of millions of daily active users relying on group chats for family coordination, community updates, work discussions, and more. Previously, new joiners could only see messages sent after their arrival, often requiring awkward “catch-up” summaries or repeated explanations—issues amplified in large, active family or neighborhood groups common in the country.

While no official stable release date has been announced, the gradual beta rollout suggests Meta is refining the experience based on tester feedback before pushing it to all users. As WhatsApp continues to evolve with features like text stickers, new member tags, and enhanced group tools, this chat history sharing option stands out as a practical upgrade that could significantly enhance group dynamics, especially in a market where group chats are integral to daily communication.
