Elon Musk’s Starlink India launch: Expected plans, prices, speeds, availability and more

Elon Musk’s satellite internet venture, Starlink, is on the brink of launching in India and it’s creating curiosity across the tech world and among everyday internet users. While SpaceX has not officially opened orders or confirmed final plans, a string of news over the past months provides a picture of what India might soon see in terms of satellite-based broadband.

Early Pricing Glitch

Late in 2025, people noticed what appeared to be a price listing on Starlink’s India site, showing a residential plan at about Rs. 8,600 per month along with a one-time hardware kit fee of Rs. 34,000. Unlimited data, high uptime, and simple installation were among the features showcased.

However, Starlink later clarified that these prices were not official. A SpaceX executive explained the site was never live for customers, and what was briefly visible was simply “dummy test data” from a configuration error. No orders were being taken, and pricing had not been confirmed by the company.

What Might Real Plans Look Like?

While the official pricing is still pending, several reports and regulatory filings over the past year suggest Starlink has been gearing up with a range of potential offerings for India. Earlier industry estimates pointed to monthly plans at roughly Rs. 3,000 with a similar hardware cost, which would aim the service at areas outside traditional broadband coverage.

Other industry news had hinted at even lower introductory prices possibly below Rs. 850 per month as part of promotional efforts to quickly attract users in India’s highly competitive market. These figures have yet to be validated by SpaceX itself.

Speed, Coverage, and the Bigger Picture

Starlink’s low-Earth-orbit satellite network promises speeds significantly higher than traditional geostationary satellite internet and latency low enough for everyday use like streaming or video calls. Independent data from global deployments shows typical speeds ranging broadly, but often enough for reliable home connectivity.
For India, this could be especially transformative in remote or rural regions where fibre rollout remains limited and 4G/5G signals are intermittent. Satellite internet doesn’t rely on ground infrastructure, offering a lifeline to schools, businesses, and households in places previously underserved.

Regulatory Roadmap and Expectations

Starlink has already crossed several regulatory hurdles, including securing licences and trial spectrum approvals from India’s Department of Telecommunications  key steps before commercial launch. Although a firm rollout date has not been announced, industry observers expect the service to begin in stages, with broader availability as infrastructure and regulatory compliance mature.

As Elon Musk himself and Indian telecom officials have emphasised, Starlink’s arrival could mark a new chapter in connectivity  but the final details on pricing, plans, and nationwide rollout are still unfolding.
