The Tesla Roadster has been sort of a unicorn in the EV and tech space, with multiple delays since its original reveal in late 2017. CEO Elon Musk has teased us with multiple potential launch dates over the years, only to be followed by indefinite delays, citing development concerns. With the Cybertruck finding its way out of the factory doors in late 2024, hopes are now high as Elon Musk has confirmed a potential launch schedule for the new Roadster next month, i.e., April 2026.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Musk replied to a nostalgic video marking the anniversary of the original Tesla Roadster’s production start in 2008 with a direct update, “New Roadster unveil hopefully next month. It will be a banger next-level.”
The original post highlighted the historic moment when Tesla began building its first production vehicle, the original first-generation Roadster – a car that put Tesla on the automotive map 18 years ago. Musk sent his personal Cherry Red Roadster atop the SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket as a test payload, settling it in an orbit that goes around Mars, Earth, and the Sun.
Long-awaited revival of Tesla’s iconic sports car
The second-generation Tesla Roadster has been one of the most anticipated vehicles in Tesla’s pipeline since it was first teased in 2017. Musk has repeatedly promised revolutionary performance specs, including a 0-60 mph acceleration under one second, a top speed over 250 mph, and a range exceeding 600 miles — capabilities that would make it the fastest production car in the world.
The announcement comes just as Tesla plans to wrap up production of the flagship Model S sedan and Model X SUV across the world, owing to make space for production of the Tesla Optimus robot.
Currently, Tesla’s vehicle lineup includes the Model 3 compact sedan and Model Y compact SUV, along with the Cybertruck pickup available in select markets only. With competition heating up in China, the second-generation Roadster has a lot riding on its shoulders to take on similar sports cars from companies like BYD and Rimac.
Musk hints at a dramatic reveal
Given the history of iconic launches at Tesla, the company is expected to host a dramatic launch event for the new Roadster, potentially showing the quick acceleration and top speed. Could Musk launch the new Roadster atop the Starship and land it on the Moon as a lunar vehicle for Artemis astronauts? Only time could tell.
Musk’s post quickly went viral, racking up more than 32 million views and thousands of replies within hours. Fans and analysts reacted with a mix of hype and cautious optimism, with many noting the “next-level” phrasing as a hint at groundbreaking new technology in the EV space — possibly including advanced battery chemistry, next-gen motors, or even SpaceX-inspired features like cold-gas thrusters that were once promised for the car.
Note that no official date or live-stream details have been shared yet, and Tesla has not issued an additional statement regarding the launch.
