For the very first time, an Indian film director has been chosen to represent the film industry at the Republic Day parade. Filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali will lead this honor, presenting a special tableau that celebrates the magic and heritage of our movies. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has teamed up with Bhansali for this unique project. On Monday, January 26, millions of viewers will see a grand float at Kartavya Path dedicated to Indian cinema. According to a report from the Times of India, Bhansali was the clear choice for this role. He is often called the ‘flag-bearer’ of Indian cinema because of his ability to showcase Indian culture, music, and art on a massive scale.
A Landmark moment at Kartavya Path
This honor is a big step for the film community. Usually, the republic day parade focuses on military strength and regional cultures. But for the first time having a dedicated film tableau led by a director like Bhansali shows how much Indian cinema has grown over the years.
The man behind the vision
Sanjay Leela Bhansali is much more than just a man behind the camera. He really does everything. He produces his own films, writes the stories, sits in the editing room, and even creates the music. His journey started all the way back in 1996 with Khamoshi: The Musical. Since that first step, he has spent nearly thirty years making movies that look like beautiful paintings on the big screen. He is known for his grand style, and very few people in the world can make a movie look as rich and colorful as he does.
Over the decades, he has delivered one masterpiece after another, starting with Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam in 1999, which made him famous, followed by the grand spectacle of Devdas in 2002, which even made it to the Cannes Film Festival. He later won a National Award for the emotional story Black in 2005 and shattered box office records with massive period dramas like Bajirao Mastani and Padmaavat.
With seven National Film Awards and the Padma Shri to his name, his place in history is already guaranteed, and he continues to innovate, recently finding huge success on streaming platforms with his series Heeramandi.
Bhansali’s upcoming projects for 2026
Even with the Republic Day preparations, Bhansali has a very busy year ahead. His production house is getting ready for the release of Do Deewane Seher Mein, a modern-day love story starring Siddhant Chaturvedi and Mrunal Thakur. Directed by Ravi Udyawar, the film is scheduled to release on February 20, 2026.
Of course, the project everyone is waiting for is Love & War. This film features a massive cast including Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, and Vicky Kaushal. While there has been some confusion about the release date with some reports suggesting it might move to early 2027 recent updates from the team suggest they are still working hard to keep it on track for 2026.
Whether it’s at the Republic Day parade or on the big screen, 2026 is shaping up to be a massive year for Sanjay Leela Bhansali and his fans.
