For years, Indian travellers looking for a quick international getaway have flocked to Thailand or Vietnam with their pristine beaches and lush greenery. However, recent data suggests that a different island is quickly becoming the favourite; one that is quite literally our neighbour.
According to figures released by the Sri Lankan tourism authority on January 18, 2026, Sri Lanka saw a massive influx of international visitors last year, and it was none other than Indians who led the charge with the highest number of tourists.
India dominates as the top source market
According to a report by PTI, Sri Lanka welcomed a total of 2.3 million tourists in 2025. Out of this total, India remained the undisputed leader – contributing 531,511 arrivals. This is more than double the number of visitors from any other country and shows a growth of over 114,000 travellers compared to the previous year. Overall, the country saw a year-on-year growth of 15%, proving that the island is back on the map for global travellers.
The data shows that Indian arrivals made up more than 23% of the monthly total on average. December was the busiest month for Indian tourists, with 56,715 people making the trip across the Palk Strait. Even in February, which was the slowest month for Indian travel, the country still saw 35,000 visitors from its northern neighbour. While the UK held onto its spot as the second-highest source market with 21,277 arrivals, the sheer volume of Indian travellers shows just how much the market has shifted toward regional proximity.
Why the island is catching up to Southeast Asia
The tourism authority noted that the country has a massive appeal as a “winter sun” destination. While the Asia Pacific region is a major contributor, Europe still accounts for 51.3% of total arrivals. Together, Europe and the Asia Pacific make up nearly 93% of all visitors. December was the most successful month for the island overall, recording 258,928 total arrivals. Officials stated that these numbers confirm the country’s status as a top-tier vacation spot.
For many Indians, the draw of Sri Lanka over places like Thailand or Vietnam comes down to easier travel logistics and a familiar yet distinct culture. With the surge in flights and simplified visa processes, it has become a go-to for quick breaks. The record-breaking numbers in December suggest that instead of flying further east, more Indians are choosing the gorgeous landscapes of the emerald island for their year-end holidays.
