We all know Shikhar Dhawan as ‘Gabbar, ’the man with the famous mustache-twirl and the fearless batting style. But behind the cheering crowds and intense cricket matches, Dhawan’s life has seen some serious highs and lows. From career shifts to personal struggles, he has had to find a way to stay standing. The secret isn’t just physical training; it’s a simple, daily habit he picked up years ago: Affirmations.

Dhawan’s Journaling habit

In several podcasts, including Ranveer Allahbadia, Dhawan opened up about how he uses a journal to keep his mental health in check. Even though he has stepped away from international cricket, he isn’t just sitting back. He is using affirmations to manifest his next big move. He admits that he is in a major transition phase, moving from being a goal-driven athlete to someone who wants to make it big in business and entertainment.

In his journal, he doesn’t just write down wishes; he writes down certainties. He uses phrases like, “I am very successful, I am very wealthy, and I am very healthy.” For him, it’s about “high vibrations.” He told his audience that no matter where life takes him next, he sees himself winning. He has surrendered to the process, trusting that whatever nature brings his way is exactly what is meant for him.

Dealing with doubt and restlessness

It is easy to think that a superstar like Dhawan doesn’t feel anxious, but he was very honest about his moments of “bechaini” or restlessness. He admitted that there are times when he feels uneasy because he doesn’t know exactly what the future holds. This is a very human feeling that most of us can relate to, especially when we are at a crossroads or starting something new.

When that feeling hits, Dhawan brings himself back to his affirmations. He believes that your future is just a collection of your daily routines. If you can control your routine and your thoughts today, you can shape what happens tomorrow. For him, the present moment is the only place where you actually have power.

How does journaling work?

While it might sound like a simple habit, experts say there is a real psychological reason why this works. Ms. Kamna Chhibber, Director of Mental Health and Behavioural Sciences at Fortis Gurgaon, explains that journaling is most effective when it is done with a specific goal in mind rather than just rambling on paper.

“Journaling can be helpful with attainment of goals when it is done intentionally and not as a free writing,” Chhibber explains. “With actionable, intentional thoughts, a person can be reflective on the journey, anticipate pitfalls, and create a stepwise approach.” She adds that by constantly reflecting on what you are working towards, your motivation stays high and you are much more likely to take real steps toward your dreams.

Building your own routine

You don’t need to be an international cricketer to use Dhawan’s method. The science behind affirmations is about rewiring your brain to focus on the positive. As per Ms. Chhibber, this kind of reflective journaling enhances self-awareness. It helps you manage your emotions more effectively when things get tough, making it easier to stay on track.

If you want to start, follow Dhawan’s lead. Write down who you want to be in the present tense. Don’t say “I will be successful,” say “I am successful.” By doing this, you are training your mind to look for opportunities that align with that belief. It’s about building a routine that anchors you, especially when the world around you feels unpredictable.
