Every Union Budget Day, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s saree becomes a talking point alongside the financial announcements. This year she picked a Kattam Kanjeevaram saree as an ode to her Tamil roots; honouring the artisans of the state.

Budget Day is something millions of Indians look forward to, to see their financial standing for the year. It is a significant day which is made all the more special by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s sarees. For the 2026 budget presentation, Sitharaman was seen in a garment that paid homage to her roots and her home state.

When the FM presents the Union Budget, her choice of attire usually gets as much attention as the financial figures; Indians across the country attempt to decode what her outfit could mean for the annual financial plan. Since taking office in 2019, she has consistently used her platform to uplift India’s traditional handloom sector. Rather than following a western corporate dress code, she chooses sarees that represent different states and weaving techniques.

These choices are often seen as a practical way to support rural artisans and small-scale industries. By wearing a specific weave, she shines a spotlight on the crafts that might otherwise be overlooked.

People often try to find meaning in the colors or patterns she picks, though the most consistent message is a clear preference for local, handmade textiles over mass-produced fashion; the minister is a firm supporter of the “Vocal for Local” initiative.

A history of traditional weaves

Sitharaman’s first budget in 2019 set the tone when she wore a pink Mangalagiri silk saree from Andhra Pradesh. That year was also notable because she replaced the traditional colonial-style briefcase with a red “bahi khata” to carry the budget papers. The bahi khata is a traditional Indian accounting ledger, often bound in red cloth and used in the country for centuries by small businessmen.

During the 2020 budget, she was seen in a bright yellow-gold silk saree with green borders; her choice clearly meant to promote a message of prosperity and economic growth. This was followed in 2021 by a red and white Pochampally ikat from Telangana – highly recognizable by its geometric patterns. The colour scheme of the saree clearly symbolized bold ambition with its bright hues and interesting print.

In 2022, she wore a rusty brown Bomkai saree from Odisha with detailed threadwork, which many people felt was a simple way of acknowledging the state’s artisans and its craft traditions. The next year, she chose a red silk saree from Karnataka with black temple motifs and Kasuti embroidery, a look that was commonly seen as symbolising strength and economic stability.

For the interim budget in early 2024, she chose a blue Tussar silk with Kantha work from West Bengal, and for the full general budget later that year, she wore an off-white Mangalagiri with a purple border.

Symbols and regional ties

For the 2025 budget, she appeared in a cream-coloured handloom silk saree adorned with Madhubani artwork from Bihar. The saree was a special gift from Padma Shri awardee Dulari Devi, who had personally requested that the minister wear it on budget day. Its hand-painted fish and floral designs drew a lot of attention, with many interpreting them as symbols of prosperity and growth – perfectly in line with her habit of using major public moments to highlight the craftsmanship and personal stories of Indian artists.

For today’s 2026 budget presentation, the Finance Minister donned a deep burgundy coloured, Kattam Kanjeevaram saree as a nod to the handloom culture of the state of Tamil Nadu and her own Tamil heritage. The saree had a golden check pattern running through it – called Kattam – and a coffee coloured border completed the look. Notably, Tamil Nadu will be participating in Assembly elections this year.

Every time Sitharaman wears a specific style, interest in that particular weave tends to spike. This consistent habit has made the budget morning look a predictable part of the day’s events, calling attention to the diversity of the country’s local economies.
