Jana Nayagan release date: Thalapathy Vijay’s Jana Nayagan is set to receive the final verdict from the Supreme Court today. With some relief expected for Vijay fans, Jana Nayagan seems to be moving towards a potential release date. This came after KVN Productions challenged the Madras High Court ruling in the apex court, in an attempt to receive the final clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
Earlier set to release on January 9, Jana Nayagan is touted to be Thalapathy Vijay’s last film, as he plans to pursue full-time leadership with his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). Calling it a ‘farewell’, several industry icons have spoken in his support. The Madras HC had previously stayed a single judge’s order to issue Jana Nayagan its censor certificate.
Jana Nayagan SC hearing
Initially scheduled for January 19, the court announced on Monday that the case will now be heard on January 15. The last-minute hurdle may finally be removed from the way of film to ease its release.
The development was prompted after the single-judge bench observed that once the Central Board of Film Certification had decided to grant a certificate to Jana Nayagan, its chairperson could not lawfully refer the matter to a revising committee — even though the makers had already complied with the cuts and edits previously requested.
What to expect?
Justices Dipankar Datta and Augustine George Masih will preside over the hearing. The hearing will likely bring much-needed relief to the makers of the Rs 500 crore film and the Thalapathy Vijay fans alike. With heavy spending on the music launch at an international event in Malaysia, the SC might decide to uphold Madras HC’s stay, which will be a big blow to the franchise, or issue an interim order for an expedited review from the review committee of the CBFC.
What’s the Jana Nayagan delay?
Thalapathy Vijay’s Jana Nayagan ran into troubled waters after a member of the CBFC’s examining committee filed a complaint with the board’s chairman, alleging that their objections were not properly documented. The complaint claimed that the film hurt “religious sentiments,” prompting the CBFC to send it back for review.
It was only days before the initial release that the makers were informed of the legal showdown. KVN Productions representative and Jana Nayagan producer Venkat K Narayan issued a statement revealing that the CBFC had agreed to issue a U/A 16+ certificate in December 2025. “We firmly believe that Thalapathy Vijay sir deserves the farewell that he has earned through decades of love from his fans and the respect from the industry,” he had then expressed in a video posted on social media.
