In tragic news, Prashant Tamang, the singer who became a household name after winning Indian Idol Season 3, passed away on Sunday, January 11, 2026. He was only 43 years old. According to sources close to the family, he suffered a sudden heart attack at his home in New Delhi shortly after returning from a performance in Arunachal Pradesh reported India Today. While his family hasn’t released an official statement yet, the news has already sparked a huge wave of grief from fans across India and Nepal.
His passing has hit people hard because his journey was one of the most inspiring stories in the history of Indian reality TV. Apart from being a talented performer, he was a genuinely humble person whose rise from a regular job to national stardom really connected with the public. To many, he was proof that a common man could actually make it to the top.
From the police force to national stardom
Before he was a celebrity, Tamang’s life was centered on public service. Born in Darjeeling on January 4, 1983, he was forced to grow up quickly when his father passed away in an accident. To support his family, he took over his father’s role as a constable in the Kolkata Police. It was during his time in the police orchestra that his colleagues noticed his singing ability and pushed him to audition for Indian Idol in 2007.
As per reports from the time, his journey on the show became a massive movement. He ended up winning the title after getting more than 70 million votes, thanks to a massive wave of support from the Gorkha community and Nepali-speaking fans all over the world. That victory earned him the nickname “Pride of the Hills” and led to his first album, Dhanyavad, which was released through Sony BMG.
Building a legacy in cinema
Tamang ventured away from music and explored other avenues of creative expression as his career progressed. He took to acting and actually turned into a big movie star in the Nepali film industry. He was the lead in several hits like Gorkha Paltan, Nishani, and Pardesi. A lot of these movies dealt with themes like identity and moving abroad for work – which really hit home for his fans in both India and Nepal and made him even more of a hero in their eyes.
In his later years, he began finding success in the Indian digital space. He was recently praised for his performance as Daniel Acho in the second season of the hit series Paatal Lok. According to reports, he had also just finished filming a significant role in the upcoming military drama Battle of Galwan, produced by Salman Khan Films.
Following the news of his death, tributes have come in from across the political and entertainment spectrum. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took to social media platform X and posted, “Deeply saddened by the untimely passing of Prashant Tamang. His soulful voice and inspiring journey from a small town to winning Indian Idol touched many lives. My condolences to his family, friends, and fans during this difficult time”, while former Indian Idol judges and contestants shared their shock at his sudden passing. He is survived by his wife Martha and daughter Ariah.
