Suniel Shetty became visibly emotional on Monday (January 12, 2026) during the launch of “Jaate Hue Lamhon,” a revamped track for the upcoming film Border 2. While the event in Mumbai was meant to celebrate the music, the veteran actor couldn’t hold back tears as he spoke about the difficult road his son, Ahan, has faced since his debut. He admitted that while the public assumes things are easy for a family like theirs, the reality behind the scenes has been a period of significant anxiety and silence that hit everyone hard.
The video of Suniel breaking down has since gone viral, with many fans sharing the clip and praising his honesty as a father. At the event, he even took a moment to recreate his iconic “Dharti Meri Maa” dialogue from the original Border with Ahan standing right beside him. The emotional moment shifted the focus toward Ahan’s return to the big screen, as the industry and fans alike reacted to seeing a seasoned star show such vulnerability while supporting his son’s second chance.
The turmoil after Tadap
Ahan Shetty made his acting debut in 2021 with the film Tadap. Although the movie had a decent start, it ultimately struggled at the box office, partly due to the impact of the pandemic. Following its release, Ahan experienced a four-year gap in his career during which several of his planned projects were reportedly cancelled or delayed.
Speaking at the event with tears in his eyes, Suniel Shetty challenged the common perception that celebrity children have it easy:
“Everyone thinks, ‘Yes, he is Suniel Shetty’s son, he must be getting a lot of work.’ But there is a lot that Ahan went through in life. After his first film, there was a little break… there was a lot of turmoil in our lives.”
Suniel shared that this period of uncertainty was difficult for their entire family and tested their patience. During the event, producer Bhushan Kumar was seen comforting the actor and mentioned that Suniel had been emotional throughout the day. According to Kumar, Suniel had called him earlier unable to hold back tears after hearing the emotional depth of the film’s new song.
Border 2: A father’s redemption
For Suniel Shetty, Ahan landing a lead role in Border 2 is more than just a second chance – it is a full-circle moment. Suniel’s portrayal of Bhairon Singh in the original 1997 Border remains one of the most iconic roles of his career. “I am so happy that he got a film like Border 2. It couldn’t have been a better film, and I just pray that he has done justice to it and that the film works for all of us,” he said.
Seeing his son step into the same franchise alongside Sunny Deol and Varun Dhawan moved the veteran actor to express deep gratitude to the makers. “From a father’s point of view, I am indebted,” Suniel stated, specifically thanking producers Nidhi Dutta and J.P. Dutta for believing in Ahan when the industry had largely gone quiet. He shared the advice he gave his son upon him donning the olive green uniform for the film:
“I told him, ‘Ahan, it is not just a uniform. Remember this… our country is known for courage, and these officers are the reason.’ I told him whatever you do, do it with your heart.”
Border 2 is currently slated for a massive theatrical release on January 23, 2026, perfectly timed for the Republic Day weekend. For Ahan, the film represents a “new beginning,” while for Suniel, it is clearly the end of a long and painful wait for his son’s ‘redemption” on the big screen
