While Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimaiyil arrived in theaters on January 15, 2026 with a decent amount of critical praise, its Box Office journey has been a bit of an uphill battle so far. Even with the advantage of a festive Pongal release, the film is struggling to find its footing in a crowded market. It currently sits in the shadow of massive South Indian blockbusters like Chiranjeevi’s Mana Shankara Vara Prasad Garu and Sivakarthikeyan’s Parasakthi that are pulling in the lion’s share of the audience. Despite some positive reviews calling it a clever satire, the film hasn’t quite managed to turn that critical appreciation into a massive rush at the ticket counters.
Directed by Nithish Sahadev, the movie features Jiiva as a village leader caught in the middle of a ridiculous feud over a wedding and a funeral happening at the same time. It also stars veterans like Thambi Ramaiah and Ilavarasu who round out the cast, and the production by Kannan Ravi is quite polished.
The story tries to balance humor with a message about community and ego, which is usually a sure-shot formula to attract festive audiences. However, in a season where viewers are gravitating toward larger-than-life spectacles and big-star vehicles, this smaller, character-driven comedy is finding it hard to compete for screen space and attention.
How did TTT perform at the Box Office?
When looking at the numbers, the film’s performance on Day 2 remained fairly modest. After a slow start on Thursday, the movie saw a slight bump on Friday, January 16, earning around Rs 2.7 crore net in India as per Sacnilk. This brings its two-day domestic total to roughly Rs 4.2 crore. While any growth is technically a good sign, these figures are quite low when compared to the record-breaking numbers being posted by other regional films right now. It is clear that the movie is being squeezed by the heavy competition, making it difficult for the film to gain the momentum it needs to be considered a major success.
The total gross collections are just a little shy of the Rs 5 crore mark with 4.95 in earnings – which is a relatively quiet start for a Jiiva starrer during a major holiday window. Without a massive surge over the rest of the weekend, it may struggle to recover its costs in the long run. The film is currently relying heavily on a very specific urban audience, as it hasn’t yet managed to capture the wider mass market that typically drives festive collections.
Theatre occupancy for TTT
The theatre occupancy figures for Day 2 reflect this struggle to attract a wide audience. Across the Tamil market, the film recorded an overall occupancy of about 60.94%, which sounds decent on paper but looks much thinner when you consider the limited number of screens it is playing on. Morning shows were particularly quiet with only 36% occupancy, and while things did improve in the evening to about 77%, many shows were still far from being sold out.
In terms of city-specific performance, Chennai saw about 73% occupancy, but that was spread across a relatively small number of shows (273 shows) compared to the season’s bigger hits. In areas like Coimbatore and Salem, the occupancy hovered between 60% and 66%, showing that the film is getting a lukewarm response in the major hubs. While smaller centers like Dindigul reported higher percentages around 93%, the actual number of seats available there is small. In Bengaluru, the movie barely made a dent with 20% occupancy across 50 shows. Unless the word-of-mouth translates into much higher footfalls very quickly, the film risks being replaced by more popular titles in the coming week.
