Sunjay Kapur inheritance battle: Sunjay Kapur’s mother, Rani Kapur, has approached the Delhi High Court alleging that her daughter-in-law, Priya Kapur used ‘fraudulent’ means to control key stakes in the Sona Group companies, in collusion with other family members, reported ANI. The complaint alleged that she used a fraudulent trust to unlawfully divert her entire estate, family legacy, and control of key stakes in their assets. This came after Priya Kapur succeeded Sunjay Kapur’s leadership in Sona Comstar, after his sudden death in 2025.

The detailed civil suit also overtly mentioned the ‘RK Family/ Rani Kapur Family Trust’, which was created in October 2017. The complaint alleged that it was illegal, void, and the result of fraud, forgery, and undue influence, naming Priya Kapur. This follows legal action taken by the industrialist’s wife against sister-in-law and the daughter of Rani Kapur, Mandhira, who was accused of making derogatory and defamatory remarks against Priya Kapur.

Rani Kapur’s appeal to Delhi HC

According to the detailed observations from the plaintiff, Rani Kapur has been touted as the sole beneficiary of the entire estate of her late husband, Dr Surinder Kapur. He is not only the father of late Sunjay Kapur, but also the founder and promoter of the Sona Group. However, following his demise in 2015, Rani Kapur was made the exclusive heir to his assets.

In September 2017, though, Rani Kapur became medically and emotionally dependent on her son, Sunjay and his third wife, Priya, after suffering a stroke. It was then that the defendants allegedly created the RK Family Trust, without her consent. The complaint also stated that her assets were siphoned into the named trust, where she was neither named as a beneficiary nor retained any control, despite carrying her name, ‘Rani Kapur’ Family Trust.

How the trust came to be?

The fresh lawsuit was triggered, not only by the Rs 30,000 inheritance battle, but also by a 2023 lawsuit, which brought the trust’s existence to life. Till 2019, Rani Kapur had reportedly no knowledge of a separate trust under this name and was misled into believing it was just another name for the assets she already owned.

Rani Kapur’s accusations

However, in 2023, during proceedings of an intellectual property case connected to the Sona Group, the ‘RK Family Trust’ documents emerged. Kapur further demanded a copy of the trust, but only managed to gain access to them after his death. Another serious allegation also points to Priya Kapur having forged Rani Kapur’s initials on the trust deed, reportedly revealed in a forensic investigation.

Sunjay Kapur’s mother also accused Priya Kapur and others of deliberately cutting her access to company information, email account, and creating a fake account to validate the transactions, without her knowledge, reported ANI.
