After a brief hiatus from the silver screen, Shah Rukh Khan is set to return with a bang. According to reports, the actor’s upcoming action-thriller, King, has locked its release for December 25, 2026, although the news is yet to be officially confirmed. Directed by Siddharth Anand, who previously worked with the superstar on the blockbuster Pathaan, the film is being designed as one of the most expensive action events in Indian cinema history.

According to reports from Bollywood Hungama, the makers initially considered a release earlier in December but decided on Christmas to avoid clashing with the mega-budget Ramayana: Part 1. This strategic move creates a 45-day buffer, allowing both tentpole films enough room to perform well without eating into each other’s business. With a staggering budget of Rs 350 crore, King is expected to be a global production: featuring six major action set pieces shot in real locations across Poland and Mumbai.

A massive ensemble cast with a protégé plot

The excitement around King isn’t just because of Shah Rukh Khan’s return – it also marks the theatrical debut of his daughter, Suhana Khan. Reports from India Today suggest the story is inspired by the Hollywood classic Léon: The Professional. Shah Rukh Khan is set to play a sleek, deadly assassin, while Suhana’s character will be his protégé. This father-daughter dynamic on screen is one of the most highly-anticipated elements of the film.

The supporting cast is equally impressive. Abhishek Bachchan has been cast as the primary antagonist and Deepika Padukone has also joined the project in a lead role, alongside veteran actors like Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff, and Rani Mukerji. This star-studded lineup makes it one of the largest ensemble casts assembled for a modern Hindi film in recent years.

Production and strategic release timing

The transition of this project from a smaller thriller to a mega-actioner happened when Siddharth Anand took the helm. According to The Week, the budget jumped from an initial Rs 150 crore to Rs 350 crore after Khan gave the director a free hand to scale up the vision. The film’s music is being handled by Anirudh Ravichander, the composer behind the soundtrack of Khan’s film Jawan, which adds another layer of anticipation for fans.

By choosing the Christmas 2026 window, the film will enjoy a relatively solo run at the domestic Box Office. While Hollywood’s Avengers: Doomsday is slated to release a week earlier, industry experts believe the local demand for a Shah Rukh Khan film will be more than enough to dominate the Indian market. An official teaser and formal announcement are expected to drop in the coming days, as director Siddharth Anand has already begun teasing the date on social media.
