In a major relief for Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh, the CBFC concluded that there was no connection between his latest film Dhurandhar and the life of Ashoka Chakra awardee Late Major Mohit Sharma. The film certification board undertook a fresh examination of the film after it was directed to do so by the Delhi High Court, who asked the CBFC to consider the objections brought up by the late Major’s parents.
The board’s latest communication rejected the family’s objections and said that the film bore no resemblance to the life, service, or experiences of Major Sharma.
What the CBFC said about Dhurandhar
In its fresh examination of the film, CBFC officials attempted to answer the court’s question about whether “the film, in any manner, directly or indirectly depicts, resembles or derives from Major Sharma’s life” as per Hindustan Times.
It found that not only did the film have no factual or biographical similarity to the life of Major Sharma, but it also contained a clear disclaimer that all characters’ events and storylines were fictitious and did not relate to any real persons, living or deceased. The internal note also mentioned that the committee examining the film had already viewed it on November 28, 2025 and found it suitable with only slight modifications required.
After the court’s order on Dec 1, the officials revisited the matter but found no reason to change their initial conclusion. The CBFC currently maintains that the film is still broadly within the realm of fictional story telling.
What was the controversy about?
Ahead of the film’s release, the family of Ashoka Chakra awardee Late Major Mohit Sharma who was martyred in an encounter with militants in the Hafruda forest of the Kupwara sector of Jammu and Kashmir, came forward to file a petition requesting a stay on the release of the film. They accused the filmmakers of drawing inspiration from their son’s life and covert missions without their consent.
In the meanwhile. Naureen Aslam, the widow of Pakistani police officer Chaudhary Aslam who has been represented in the movie, threatened to take legal action if her husband was falsely portrayed. Certified A (Adults only) Dhurandhar is set to release in theatres on December 5, 2025.
