Sunjay Kapur inheritance battle: Priya Kapur, wife of late industrialist Sunjay Kapur has filed a criminal defamation case against her sister-in-law Mandhira Kapur over her comments during podcast, InControversial. Priya Kapur is set to appear before the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate, Patiala House Courts on January 21, as per a Bar and Bench report. This comes days after Priya Kapur filed an appeal to the Supreme Court of India to access the divorce settlements of Sunjay and Karisma Kapoor, which took place in 2016.

Speaking to Financial Express.com, Senior Advocate Maninder Singh, representing Priya Kapur, revealed that Mandhira Kapur had given “multiple statements, video podcasts, interviews, and press statements,” and launched “defamatory allegations since his (Sunjay) death.” Singh described them as a series of false statements, insinuations, and public attacks which resurfaced on Instagram, Facebook, and even print media.

Mandhira Kapur’s statements against Priya

Based on previous media reports, Sunjay Kapur’s sister had claimed in October 2025 that Priya was one of the major reasons that broke Karisma and Sunjay Kapur’s marriage. Speaking to journalist Vickey Lalwani, she opened up about the allegedly strained relationship. Recalling the time when Karisma had just recently given birth to their son Kiaan, she had said, “To think for another woman to not care about a woman who’s just had a child is in bad taste. To come and disrupt a family is in bad taste. And I will leave it there.”

Furthermore, in a recent interaction with ANI, Mandhira reiterated these claims. It referred to Priya Kapur’s appeal to the apex court to access the divorce proceedings in order to get a clearer picture of the custody agreement shared between Karisma and Sunjay in 2016. The move has been presented as a means to ascertain the financial and child custody arrangements made after the split.

Mandhira, speaking to ANI, had said, “It’s trying to divert what is going on…If my brother wanted to share this with her, he would have shared it while they were married…It is none of her business…A divorce is confidential. They have children together.”

In a previous interaction, a source close to Sunjay Kapur’s estate battle had told Financial Express.com: “Individuals who worked with Surinder Kapur, including Dinesh Agarwal, abruptly stopped communicating with the Kapur family (that founded the Sona Group empire) after Sunjay’s death. Access to the home, documents and all records was blocked.”

However, the source also revealed, “Sunjay had an extremely close and hands-on relationship with his children. Samaira and Kiaan were central to his life, and he was meticulous about every detail concerning them.”
