For anyone who grew up watching Indian Idol in the early 2000s, winners were rooted for and became familiar to audiences across the nation as the show progressed. That is why, the unexpected passing of singer and actor Prashant Tamang shocked those who watched him clinch the winning title on the show’s third season. Tamang passed away on January 12, 2026 and is survived by his wife Martha and daughter Ariah. He was only 43 years old.
Though speculations regarding the circumstances of his death arose on social media, his wife Martha Aley was quick and firm to shut down any rumour mongering – saying that her husband’s death was natural and that he had passed away in his sleep.
Dismissing any rumours and thanking fans
Speaking to ANI, Martha – who married Tamang in 2011 – assured fans that there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding her husband’s death and that he was “in his sleep” when he died. “It was a natural death. He was in his sleep when he left us. I was right beside him at that time,” she said. Concerns arose as Tamang seemed to have suffered a sudden cardiac arrest with no previous history of health issues – making the condition an uncommon one for his relative youth.
She also thanked fans for their overwhelming support and their outpouring of love and condolences following Prashant Tamang’s death. “Thank you to everyone. I’ve been receiving calls from all over the world. People that I know, people that I don’t know, I’ve been getting flowers. People are standing outside my house, people have come to the hospital to see him for the last time,” she said.
“It’s really overwhelming for me, and please love him as you have loved him earlier. He was a great soul, he was a great human. I hope you remember him like that,” she added, reiterating the affection she held for Tamang.
About Prashant Tamang
Prashant Tamang’s journey is widely regarded as one of the most inspiring ‘common man’ stories in Indian television history. Born in Darjeeling in 1983, he was working as a constable for the Kolkata Police – a job he took over to support his family after his father’s passing – when he auditioned for Indian Idol in 2007.
His humble personality and soulful voice sparked an unprecedented movement, leading him to win the Season 3 title with over 70 million votes. This victory turned him into a cultural icon – particularly for the Gorkha community and the Nepali-speaking diaspora – and launched his career with his debut album, Dhanyavad.
Tamang also took a shot at acting, having successfully transitioned into a leading man in the Nepali film industry. He starred in blockbusters like Gorkha Paltan and Pardesi. More recently, he’d been breaking into Indian streaming and movies too – receiving a lot of praise for his role in the series Paatal Lok and finishing up work on a new military drama called Battle of Galwan. Even with all that fame, he stayed incredibly down-to-earth and never forgot where he came from.
