Sivakarthikeyan’s latest movie, Parasakthi, finally hit theaters on Saturday, January 10. Directed by Sudha Kongara, the film is a period drama set in post-independence South India, focusing on social justice and political struggles. It marks a notable shift for Sivakarthikeyan, who steps away from his trademark light-hearted persona to take on a far more restrained and serious role.

The movie had a significant amount of buzz leading up to its release, especially with Sudha Kongara at the helm. While it isn’t a typical high-energy blockbuster, it still managed to draw a decent crowd on its first day. Most of the early reviews praise the production quality and the way it handles its historical themes, though some viewers have mentioned that the pacing is a bit slow in certain parts.

Day 1 Box Office performance

Parasakthi registered a respectable opening at the domestic Box Office. According to early estimates from industry tracker Sacnilk, the film garnered approximately Rs 12.35 crore net on its first day. While this figure represents a solid start for a film of its genre, it fell slightly below some initial trade expectations, which had projected collections closer to Rs 15 crore.

Globally, the film earned around Rs 24 crore on Day 1, as per Sacnilk, with overseas earnings amounting to Rs 10 crores. This figure did not surpass the opening records of Sivakarthikeyan’s previous successful ventures, Amaran and Madharaasi, which had stronger global starts at Rs 35 crore and Rs 25 crore, respectively. The film benefited from a clear run in the Tamil market due to the postponement of other major releases, though it faced stiff competition from films in other languages, such as Prabhas’s The Raja Saab, which opened to over Rs 100 crore.

Theatre occupancy details

The film’s performance in theaters showed a clear upward trend throughout its opening day. According to Sacnilk, Parasakthi recorded an impressive overall Tamil occupancy of 62.79% across all shows. This trend was evident from the morning shows, which began at 45.71% occupancy. As the day progressed, the numbers climbed significantly, with afternoon shows reaching 63.53% and evening shows hitting 62.88%. The peak occupancy was observed during the night shows, which saw a robust 79.04% of seats filled.

Interest levels varied significantly across major cities in South India. Chennai led the way with a strong 76% occupancy across nearly 900 shows. Other major hubs also saw good turnouts, with Trichy recording 73.5% and Coimbatore at 64.8%. Outside of Tamil Nadu, Bengaluru saw a decent 46.25% occupancy, while regions like Kochi and Trivandrum had a slower start, hovering around 30% and 27.5%, respectively. This strong showing in core Tamil markets suggests that positive early word-of-mouth is helping the film build momentum as it heads into the holiday week.
