Nick Reiner, the 32-year-old son of director Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, was arrested Sunday night after his parents were found dead in their home in the upscale Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles. Authorities said he is being held without bail at the city’s Twin Towers Correctional Facility.

Rob Reiner, 78, was a famous actor and director, known for films like This Is Spinal Tap, When Harry Met Sally…, and The Princess Bride. He was also active in California politics, supporting causes like gay marriage. His wife, Michele Singer Reiner, 70, was a photographer and producer. The couple had three grown children and were well-known in entertainment and political circles.

According to Los Angeles police, Rob and Michele were found stabbed to death on Sunday afternoon. The Los Angeles Police Department’s investigation focused on their son, Nick Reiner, partly due to his past struggles with drug abuse and bouts of homelessness that began in his teenage years. Over the years, Nick had spoken publicly about these struggles and had worked with his father on the semi-autobiographical film Being Charlie, which was loosely based on his early life.

Authorities said the case would be presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney on Tuesday as they considered potential charges. Based on the timeline shared by officials, prosecutors would have until Wednesday to file charges.

What happened a night before the murder?

The night before the couple was found dead, Nick Reiner attended a holiday party with his father at the home of comedian Conan O’Brien. Multiple attendees described a tense scene, with Rob and Nick getting into a heated argument. One guest said Rob told his son that his behavior was inappropriate, and the shouting match left several people concerned.

While the exact details of the argument remain unclear, attendees noted that many at the gathering were aware of Nick’s past struggles with substance abuse. One guest said Nick appeared anxious and uncomfortable throughout the evening, which unsettled other attendees. Another person at the party said they noticed Nick lingering on the edges of the gathering, though they did not see the argument directly. Representatives for O’Brien declined to comment.

Nick Reiner’s background

Nick Reiner has had a history of drug abuse and rehabilitation. By his early 20s, he had reportedly been in and out of rehab around 18 times. In 2016, he co-wrote the film Being Charlie with a friend he met in rehab, Matt Elisofon. Elisofon declined to comment on the recent events when reached by phone.

Neighbors in West Los Angeles said Nick’s struggles with drugs and alcohol were widely known in the community. Despite the family’s prominence, the younger Reiner had faced ongoing personal challenges that were publicly discussed and widely reported in the past.

Community and police response

The Reiners’ property was guarded by private security, with “no trespassing” signs posted at the entry and driveway gates. Law enforcement officials confirmed that the focus of the investigation remained on Nick Reiner, given the family’s history and the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The deaths of Rob and Michele Reiner shocked both their neighbors and the broader public. Friends and colleagues described the couple as highly respected in their fields, with Rob being celebrated for his contributions to film and political activism, and Michele for her work as a photographer and producer.

While authorities continue their investigation, the focus remains on gathering evidence and establishing a clear timeline leading up to the deaths.
