Late industrialist Sunjay Kapur’s mother Rani Kapur has accused his widow Priya Kapur of concealing his assets in a new row that added to the already escalating feud over his Rs 30,000-crore estate. Earlier, Sanjay Kapur’s children with Karisma Kapoor had levelled allegations against Priya of forging his will. This disputed will presented by Priya Kapur, made her the sole inheritor of his properties, completely excluding his two children, mother and siblings.

Rani Kapur’s decision to move the Delhi High Court against her daughter-in-law has now heightened the tensions further. Represented by Senior Advocate Vaibhav Gaggar, Mrs Kapur alleged that there was “massive concealment” of her son’s assets and that funds may have been transferred abroad as Priya claimed that Kapur only had Rs 1.7 crore in his accounts.

‘Just his salary was Rs 60 crore’

Rani Kapur’s legal counsel Vaibhav Gaggar, making his remarks in front of Justice Jyoti Singh, said, ““Massive concealment. This house (farmhouse in Delhi’s Rajokri area) is built by my late husband. There are more than 50 pieces of artwork there… This gentleman (Sunjay Kapur) had no life insurance, no rental income, and mutual funds? Just his salary was ₹60 crore, and we are saying that he has only ₹1.7 crore in his accounts.”

He continued, “My Lady may seek details of 2 years, not just of Mr Kapur but also of Defendant No 1 because the money has moved. Any interim order must be in the nature of status quo ante because the money has moved across borders, potentially.”

Priya Kapur had claimed that it was tradition in the Kapur family for a husband to leave his personal assets to his spouse just as Sanjay’s father had bequeathed everything to Rani Kapur. Advocate Gaggar countered this as well, saying that the two relationships were not comparable according to his client.

“How can you compare the two? She was married to Sunjay for seven years. This was his third and her second marriage. I was married to my husband for forty years. The distinction doesn’t end here. Our Will was registered. The witness to our Will was a person whom my husband had known for 30 years. Here, the witness says he wasn’t even associated with the company before 2022,” said the lawyer.

The senior advocate made further claims that the couple was having marital troubles since 2023 and that it was “highly unlikely and improbable” that he would make her the sole beneficiary of his personal property, emphasising that Kapur shared “a deep bond and equal affection with all his children, his mother, and other members of the Kapur family.”

The feud between Priya Kapur and Sanjay Kapur’s children

Since the businessman’s sudden death in June this year, the battle for his assets has been bitter. His children Samaira and Kiaan filed a suit in the Delhi High Court claiming that the will presented by their father’s wife was fake and had been fabricated. On November 17, after hearing the case, Joint Registrar (Judicial) Gagandeep Jindal issued notices to Priya Kapur and Shradha Suri Marwah, the executor of the alleged will, on the plea and asked them to file their replies within three weeks.

Justice Jyoti Singh, to whom Advocate Gaggar made his case, was also hearing the Kapur children’s interim injunction, filed to restrain Priya Kapur from creating any third-party rights over their father’s property. As the case unfolds, all eyes will be on the court’s next steps, which could significantly shape the future of the ongoing family dispute and set future precedents.
