He became a household name across Asia for his portrayal of the patriotic hero Chen Zhen in the television series The Legendary Fok and its sequel Fist of Fury. After a long period of retirement that began in the 1980s, he made one of the most successful comebacks in film history.

In 2004, Stephen Chow cast him as the primary antagonist in Kung Fu Hustle. His performance as the unassuming but deadly “Beast” introduced him to a global generation of fans. According to reports from South China Morning Post, his family is currently preparing for a private farewell ceremony, which is scheduled to take place on January 26 in Shenzhen.

According to CNA Lifestyle, actor and director Stephen Chow shared a simple but moving tribute on his Instagram Story, writing, “Forever remembering Mr. Leung Siu-lung.” Chow and Leung had closely collaborated on the movie Kung Fu Hustle and had developed a close relationship while playing the protagonist and the antagonist respectively

Jackie Chan also shared a long and emotional post on his Weibo page, expressing his shock and sadness. Chan described Leung as a master who was proficient in many forms of traditional martial arts and someone who brought his unique style to every role. He shared on his Weibo page:

“I just returned to Beijing and was shocked to hear the news of Mr. Leung Siu-lung’s passing. For a moment, I couldn’t believe it…

In my memory, he was always a kung fu master, proficient in various traditional martial arts, each with its own unique style. He applied his lifelong learning to film and television works, making him an outstanding action director.

As an actor, he created so many classic roles, deeply loved by audiences and admired by us, his peers. Brother Leung, it’s snowing in Beijing, the sky is overcast. I miss you…🙏”

Adding a poignant touch to his departure, a final message was posted to Leung’s official Douyin account on Sunday night (Jan 18, 2026). The message, which was dated on the 14th, appeared to be written by the actor himself before he passed, telling his fans not to be sad. He wrote:

“I’ve gone to a very, very faraway place to make a film. Please forgive me for leaving without saying goodbye. Just think of it as me having gone to a very distant place to shoot a movie. I had intended to keep it a secret, so my close disciple continued posting videos as usual. I like having a bit of mystery. Live well on my behalf. Love is always here. Remember that I love you all.”

Leung Siu-lung’s passing marks the end of an era for martial arts cinema, but his legacy remains firmly etched in film history and in the hearts of generations of fans. He is survived by wife Song Xiang and his children.
