Jana Nayagan release date: Thalapathy Vijay’s swansong Jana Nayagan has received go-ahead from Madras High Court on Friday, bringing much-needed relief to both fans and the makers. The court directed CBFC to grant a U/A certificate to the much-anticipated film, facilitating its release.

The January 9 release of the Vijay-starrer was stalled after a complaint was received by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) chairperson, posing a hurdle in the film’s U/A certification.

Delivering the judgment, Justice PT Asha observed that the complainant’s objections appeared to be an “afterthought” and cautioned that such interventions could set a “dangerous trend” within the film industry.

The court also noted that the suggested modifications were already being implemented and that the CBFC certificate would be issued once these changes were completed. It further stated that the CBFC chairperson’s letter, which halted the process, was issued without proper jurisdiction.

This comes after 24 other countries, including the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) had greenlit the release of Jana Nayagan with a ’15’ rating. Due to the film’s violent scenes and sexual content, it had earlier received U/A 16+ rating.

Why was Jana Nayagan delayed?

Thalapathy’s Jana Nayagan hit a roadblock when an objecting member of the examining committee submitted a complaint to the CBFC chairman. They claimed that the complainant’s objections weren’t adequately recorded in the matter. The complaint claimed that Jana Nayagan hurt ‘religious sentiments’ and referred the film for a review. However, before this complaint the CBFC had recommended 27 individual cuts, including removing scenes and muting some dialogues, to the film in December 2025, all of which were included.

The makers of Jana Nayagan, after spending heavily on a Pongal release promotions, then informed that the release was postponed ‘due to unavoidable circumstances’. Jana Nayagan, reportedly made on a budget of Rs 500 crore, was set to release across 5000 screens on Pongal 2026.

The political drama is also touted to be Thalapathy Vijay’s final film before he enters politics full-time with his party Tamilanga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). Releasing across 5 major languages, the film also stars Bollywood’s favourite villain Bobby Deol, Pooja Hegde, and Mamitha Baiju. Securing a Rs 121 crore OTT deal, the final release date of Jana Nayagan has not been made official yet.
