The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has filed a counter-appeal against Madras High Court‘s order that green-lit release of Thalapathy Vijay’s final film Jana Nayagan and demanded an urgent hearing in the matter, wanting a revising committee to review the film.
Reacting to this, the Chief Justice said that the writ appeal might be addressed today if filed. The order had earlier directed the censor watchdog to issue the U/A censor certificate to the film, bringing relief to the fans and makers of the Rs 500 crore film.
However, the legal battle for Thalapathy Vijay‘s Jana Nayagan is far from over. The highly anticipated political drama was set to release today, January 9, but an unexpected roadblock occurred in its censor certification.
It came after an individual filed a complaint with the CBFC Chairman and claimed that Jana Nayagan’s content harmed religious sentiments. CBFC’s most recent appeal also listed that the use of emblems related to the armed forces, without their consultation, was one of the reasons for their opposition.
As a cloud of uncertainty looms over Vijay’s Jana Nayagan, it cannot be released in India without a certificate from the CBFC. In a hearing from January 6, the defendants shared that 24 countries, including the UK, had allowed the release of the Thalapathy Vijay film, with a due ’15’ rating. The censor boards were clear to acknowledge the depiction of violent scenes and some obscene imagery, unsuitable for audiences below the age of 15. However, Ahimsa Entertainment, the film’s UK distributor, has also announced the postponement.
Jana Nayagan release delay
On late Wednesday night, the makers of Jana Nayagan, who had heavily pushed for a Pongal release, announced that the film was postponed ‘due to unavoidable reasons’. KVN Productions, taking to their X handle, shared, “It is with a heavy heart that we share this update with our valued stakeholders and audiences. The release of Jana Nayagan, eagerly awaited on January 9, has been postponed due to unavoidable circumstances beyond our control.”
Thalapathy fans were extremely excited for the film’s release, given that it was being marketed as his last film. Eagerly waiting for the South superstar’s intense film, there has been immense curiosity about the film’s delay.
